April 20, 2002 Delaware Places Third; Riley Wins 10,000 Meters
RICHMOND, VA - Junior Pat Riley captured the 10,000 meter run and Butch Patrick posted four top 10 finishes to lead the University of Delaware men to a third place finish and Aimee Alexander won the 5,000 meters and Monica Marchetta won the 10,000 meters to lead the UD women to a fifth place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at Sports Backers Stadium. UNC Wilmington won its sixth straight men's team title with 174.5 points while the William & Mary women won their second straight title and third in the last four years with 197.5 points. In the men's standings, William & Mary was second followed by Delaware, George Mason, James Madison, Virginia Commonwealth, and Towson. In the women's standings, George Mason was second followed by UNC Wilmington, James Madison, Delaware, Virginia Commonwealth, and Towson. The Delaware men posted 32 top 10 finishes and posted their sixth straight top four finish at the conference outdoor meet while the Blue Hen women had 34 top 10 finishes and posted their best finish in a conference championship since placing third at the 1996 America East meet. It was the first CAA track and field competition ever for both UD teams. Delaware student-athletes captured three titles during the meet as Marchetta (Milton/Milton, MA) won the 10,000 meters in a time of 39:20.47, Alexander (Carmel/Stormville, NY) won the 5,000 meters (17:33.49), and Riley (St. Mark's/Newark, DE ) won the men's 10,000 meters in 31:24.55. There were also six second place finishes for the Blue Hens led by Christine Kowalchuk (Phillipsburg/Phillipsburg, NJ) in the women's javelin (121-7), Fred DePalma (Penns Grove/Salem, NJ) in the men's javelin (169-10); the mens' 4 x 100m relay; (41.40), Brandon Nesbitt (Ewing/Trenton, NJ) in the men's 400 meters hurdles (55.15); Matt Swierzbinski (Caesar Rodney/Wyoming, DE) in the men's 10,000 meters (32:05.08), and Jon DiNozzi (Fox Lane, NY/Middletown, DE) in the men's pole vault (14-9). There were several Blue Hens with multiple top 10 finishes. For the men, Patrick (Newark/Newark, DE), seeing his first action of the season, was third in the long jump (23-0), fourth in the 100 meters (11.10), fourth in the high jump (6-3 1/4), and 10th in the 200 meters (22.73), Mike Yost (Lake Forest/Felton, DE) was third in the discus (142-3), sixth in the hammer (145-10), and seventh in the shot put (43-1), Isaac Wolkowicz (Newark/Newark, DE) was fifth in the shot put (46-7 1/4) and ninth in the discus (131-10), Jerome Holder (Woodbridge/Bridgeville, DE) was fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (56.26) and seventh in the 110 meter hurdles (15.81), and Austin Ream (Manheim Central/Manheim, PA) was seventh in the 400 meter hurdles (56.84) and 10th in the 110 meter hurdles (16.08). Multiple top 10 finishes for the UD women were Alexander, who also was fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:40.12), Jennie Chiller (Sharon/Sharon, MA) was third in the hammer (149-3) and 10th in the shot put (31-8), Jess Urbonas (Rockville/Vernon, CT) was fifth in the javelin (112-8) and ninth in the shot put (31-9 1/2) and in the discus (113-3), Kerry Van Riper (Bethlehem Central/Delmar, NY) was fifth in the hammer (142-3) and sixth in the shot put (36-3 1/2), Gena Carapezza (Notre Dame/Ewing, NJ) was sixth in the discus (118-5) and seventh in the javelin (107-9), Tyechia Smith (McNair/Jersey City, NJ) was sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:05.47) and 10th in the 400 meter hurdles (59.11), Michelle Perno (Parkland, Pa./Bear, DE) was seventh in the shot put (34-7 3/4) and in the discus (117-4), and Erin Gemmill (Penn Manor/Lancaster, PA) was 10th in both the 800 meters (2:17.92) and 1,500 meters (4:52.27). In addition for the UD women, Kate Klim (Barnstable/Cummaquid, MA) placed fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and broke her own school record for the third time this season with a time of 11:40.08.
