Blue Hens Take Team
Title at Maryland, Take Three
Firsts
COLLEGE PARK, MD - The University
of Delaware won the men's team title and the Blue Hen women
placed third at the Terrapin Outdoor Track and Field
Invitational Saturday at the University of
Maryland.
The UD men won the six-team men's title
with 149 points, edging the host Terrapins by just two
points. Maryland won the women's team title with 292 points,
passing Temple (102) and Delaware (94) in the six-team
field.
The Delaware men picked up three first
place finishes, seven second place finishes, and six third
place finishes on the way to the victory. The UD women had
two second place finishes and four third place finishes on
the day.
Picking up wins for the UD men were Tory
Smith in the javelin (172-8), Ben Thuma in the discus
(146-4 1/2), and Brandon Nesbitt in the 400m hurdles
(55.76).
Placing second were Fred DePalma
in the javelin (159-4), Mike Goodhart in the discus
(141-3 1/2) and hammer (167-8), Thuma in the shot put (42
1/2), Erik App in the pole vault (13-5 1/4), Dave
Finneran in the 3,000m steeplechase (10:21.24), and
Pat Riley in the 5,000 meters (15:11.70). Thuma also
placed fourth in the hammer (142-6). Nesbitt was also fifth
in the 110 meter hurdles (16.54).
For the Delaware women, Melissa
Calvanico placed second in the shot put (39-5 3/4) and
fourth in the discus (114-7 1/2) and hammer (131-9 1/2),
Lisa Steward was second in the pole vault (9-6 1/4),
Diethra Seymour was third in the hammer (134-4),
Lindsay Taylor was third in the javelin (105-3), and
Stephanie Kuehne was third in the high jump (4-11
3/4).
Several UD women competed at the Colonial
Relay at William & Mary Saturday. Delaware posted seven
top 10 finishes as Jen Urbonas was fourth in the
javelin (115-8), the 4 x 100m relay team was sixth in
50.16), the 4 x 1,500m relay was sixth in 20:28.09,
Colleen Christopher was eighth in the long jump
(17-3/4), the 4 x 800m relay was eighth (9:36.27), the
4x200m relay team was ninth (1:48.07), and Kerry Van
Riper was 10th in the shot put (35-8 3/4). The Blue Hens
placed 13th in the team standings with 13 points. Seton Hall
won the team title with 138 points.
