DiNozzi Wins
Pole Vault as Blue Hen Men Place Fourth in Team

DEDHAM, MA -- University of Delaware
sophomore Jon DiNozzi won the pole vault competition
with a school record leap to lead the Blue Hen men to a
fourth place finish while the Blue Hen women placed sixth
overall at the America East Outdoor Track and Field
Championships Saturday at Northeastern University's Solomon
Track.
Vermont won its second straight women's
team title with 193 points followed by Northeastern, New
Hampshire, Maine, Boston University, Delaware, Towson, and
Hartford. Northeastern captured its first men's team title
since 1992 with 193 points to outdistance Boston University,
Maine, defending champion Delaware, New Hampshire, Vermont,
Towson, and Hartford.
Vermont freshman Kristal Kostsiew won the
javelin and shot put and was third in two others to lead the
Catamount women. For Northeastern, Jared Carpenter (110m,
400m hurdles) and Bryan McCants (long jump, triple jump)
each won two events to lead the way. Northeastern's Nikiya
Reid was named the women's Outstanding Performer for the
third straight year as she captured the 100 meters, 200
meters, and 100 meter hurdles. Vermont senior Jeffrey
Guilmette was named men's Outstanding Performer as he won
the discus and the shot put.
DiNozzi (Fox Lane, NY/Middletown, DE) was
the lone Blue Hen athlete to capture an individual title as
he won the pole vault with a leap of 16-0, breaking the
Delaware record of 15-7 by Joe Kelly in 1992. DiNozzi, a
transfer from George Mason, also set the UD indoor record in
the pole vault this past winter.
Picking up second place finishes for the
Blue Hen men were sophomore Pat Riley (St. Mark's HS)
in the 10,000 meters, freshman Brandon Nesbitt
(Ewing/Trenton, NJ) in the 400 meter hurdles, junior Ben
Thuma (Northern York/Harrisburg, PA) in the discus, and
the 4 x 800 meter relay team. Sophomore Pat Boettcher
(William Penn/New Castle, DE) was third in the 800
meters (1:55.31).
The Delaware men had eighth athletes
place in the top eight in two events as Riley also placed
sixth in the 5,000 meters (15:22.16), Thuma placed sixth in
the shot put (44-2 3/4), senior Sam Yarrington
(Quaker Valley/Sewickley, PA) was third in the hammer
(184-0) and sixth in the discus (140-2), junior Mike
Goodhart (Warwick/Lititz, PA) was fourth in the hammer
(173-11) and fifth in the discus (142-1); junior Nate
Irvin (Sussex Central/Millsboro, DE) was sixth in the
100 meters (11.26) and eighth in the 200 meters (22.99),
sophomore Mike Sadowsky (Brandywine/Wilmington, DE)
was eighth in both the 10,000 meters (32:05.30) and the
5,000 meters (15:41.44), sophomore Ed Montalvo
(Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raritan, NJ) was seventh in both
the 100 meters (11.44) and 200 meters (22.89), and Jerome
Holder (Woodbridge/Bridgeville, DE) was seventh in both
the 110 meter hurdles (16.68) and 400 meter hurdles (57.13).
The Delaware women placed sixth in the
team standings for the second straight year as freshman
Christine Kowalchuk (Phillipsburg/Phillipsburg, NJ) placed
second in the javelin (124-6) and three Blue Hens picked up
third place finishes. Leading the way for the UD women were
sophomore Monica Marchetta (Milton, MA HS) in the 5,000m
(18:34.94); senior Jen Lublanecki (West Morris Central/Long
Valley, NJ) in the 200 meters (25.38), and sophomore Melissa
Calvanico (Tottenville/Staten Island, NY) in the shot put
(39-3 1/4).
For the Delaware women, Marchetta also
placed eighth in the 3,000 meters (10:45.94) and Lublanecki
was also sixth in the 100 meters (12.53). junior Diethra
Seymour (A.I. duPont/Hockessin, DE) was fourth in the hammer
(148-7); freshman Jessica Urbonas (Rockville/Vernon, CT) was
fifth in the javelin (116-9); junior Jennie Chiller (Sharon,
MA HS) was sixth in the hammer (145-10) and junior Gena
Carapezza (Notre Dame/Ewing, NJ) was sixth in the discus
(118-5).
Both Delaware teams will compete at the
Princeton Invitational next Saturday.
