Simkins Wins Five Events as University of Delaware Men Dominate at Own Delaware Open Track & Field Meet

NEWARK, DE -- Freshman Jeremy Simkins (at right) captured five events for the men and Amanda Marshall posted two first place finishes in the weight events for the Blue Hen women as UD dominated its own University of Delaware Outdoor Track & Field Open Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

The meet was the only home event of the season for the Delaware outdoor track and field teams. The Blue Hens will close out the regular season May 12 at the Tuppeny Twilight Meet at Villanova.

The Delaware men captured 18 events and the women won 11 events as Delaware dominated the meet.

Simkins was the star of the meet as he captured five titles on the day, winning the 110 meter hurdles (14.72), 400 meter hurdles (59.13), and 400 meters (50.08) on his own and teaming with Nick Morrisey, Will Jurkowski, and Alex Malikian to win the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:25.36) and combining with Ross Shober, Kyle Nagy, and Morrisey to captured the 4 x 100 meter relay (42.99).

Marshall was the top performer on the women’s side as she dominated in the weight events, winning the hammer (154-11) and discus throws (137-4) and placing second in the shot put (39-1).

Other winners on the day for the UD men had Brad Dodson winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:43.96), Kevin Kemmerle winning the 5,000 meters (16:24.33), Chris Bourke taking the 3,000 meters (8:50.70), Tim Brock capturing the 1,500 meters (4:01.48), Jurkowski winning the 800 meters (1:54.06), Conrad Rapp capturing the pole vault (15-6), Kevin McCove taking the triple jump (44-3 1/4), Shober claiming the long jump (21-11 1/2) and 100 meters (11.15), Dave Gyurina winning the javelin (168-6), Doug Alpers winning the discus (138-0), Connor Whitsel taking the hammer (157-2), and John Viotto winning the shot put (47-4 1/4).

Other winners for the UD women had Julia Somers winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase (school record time of 11:14.42), Yianna Antonopoulos capturing the 3,000 meters (10:26.89), Kellyn Wright winning the 800 meters (2:16.70), Kristi Cox taking the 400 meters (58.06), Kayla Hennessy winning the 200 meters (25.24), Kelli McDonald claiming the pole vault (12-4), Asha Quant winning the long jump (18-5 1/4), the team of Alexi Capsouras, Karen Mandrachia, Alex Francis, and Wright winning the 4 x 400 meter relay (4:06.54), and the tandem of Quant, Hennessy, Cox, and Cristine Marquez capturing the 4 x 100 meter relay (47.46).
