Eleven University of Delaware Track Standouts to Compete at ECAC/IC4A Championships This Weekend

PRINCETON, NJ -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams will take large contingents to the IC4A and ECAC Championships to be held this weekend at Princeton University’s Weaver Stadium.

Head coach Sue McGrath-Powell will take seven team members to the ECAC championships while head coach Jim Fischer’s men’s squad will have four student-athletes competing in the annual event, which includes the top NCAA Division I teams from Maine to Virginia.

Freshman Cassie White will kickoff the competition for the Blue Hens when she competes in the women’s 10,000 meters Friday night at 9:15 p.m.

A busy day Saturday for Delaware women will have the foursome of freshman Kayla Hennessy, sophomore Cristine Marquez, freshman Kristi Cox, and senior Asha Quant taking part in the 4 x 100 meter relay at 10:30 a.m., junior Kelli McDonald and junior Laura Chirico will compete in the pole vault at 11 a.m., Hennessy will compete in the 100 meter hurdles at 11:15 a.m. and the 400 meter hurdles at 1:20 p.m., Quant will compete in the long jump at 12 noon, Marquez will be among the competitors in the 400 meters at 12 noon and join teammate Quant in the 200 meters at 1:40 p.m., and Hennessy, Marquez, Cox, and Quant will take part in the 4 x 400 meter relay at 2:20 p.m.

For the Blue Hen men on Saturday, Colonial Athletic Association champion sophomore Connor Whitesel (at right) will compete in the hammer throw at 1 p.m., senior Conrad Rapp will take part in the pole vault at 4 p.m., and senior Will Jurkowski will run in the 800 meters competition at 4:50 p.m. On Sunday, freshman John Viotto will compete in the shot put at 1 p.m.

In the relay and sprint running events, those athletes that place high in the preliminaries will compete in the finals of those events on Sunday.

Each of the four Delaware men will be competing at the IC4A outdoor event for the first time in their careers. For the Delaware women, Marquez earned All-East honors a year ago with a seventh place finish in the 400 meters and also teamed with Quant for a 12th place finish in the 4 x 400 meter relay, Quant was 12th in the 4 x 400 meter relay, 13th in the long jump, and 18th in the 4 x 100 meter relay last season and was 15th in the 4 x 100 meter relay in 2006, and McDonald placed 14th in the pole vault last season.
