Delaware Men's Track & Field To Participate in Colonial Athletic Association Championships this Weekend in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s track and field squads will be competing at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships beginning Friday at the College of William & Mary’s Zable Stadium and Fraternity Field.

The meet will get underway Friday with the women’s javelin throw at 9:30 a.m. with the track events starting at 1 p.m. with the women’s 1,500 meters. The second and final day on Saturday will begin with the men’s shot put at 10 a.m. with the first track event the women’s 4 x 100 meter relay at 12:45 p.m.

Event champions will earn automatic berths into the NCAA Regional Championships to be held May 30-31 at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. Delaware, George Mason, Georgia State, UNC Wilmington, Northeastern, Virginia Commonwealth, and William & Mary will compete in the men’s meet while Delaware, George Mason, Georgia State, James Madison, UNC Wilmington, Northeastern, Towson, Virginia Commonwealth, and William & Mary will compete on the women’s side.

The women’s meet will be held for the 19th time with Northeastern the defending team champion. George Mason has won nine titles, its last in 1998, while William & Mary has captured seven titles, including the 2006 championship. Delaware placed seventh a year ago with its best finish a fifth place showing in 2002. The Hens will be looking to capture their first individual championship since Casey Bennett won the pole vault in 2005.

Leading the Blue Hen women are Asha Quant and Cristine Marquez in the sprints, Kayla Hennessy in the hurdles, Kelli McDonald and Laura Chirico in the pole vault, Quant in the jumps, and Amanda Marshall in the throwing events.

The men’s meet will be held for 19th season with UNC Wilmington the defending team champion. The Seahawks have won eight league titles with host William & Mary having won the title four times, most recently in 2004. Delaware, which posted its best CAA finish in 2002 with a second place finish, will be looking to improve upon last year’s fifth place finish. The Hens will also be looking to capture their first individual title since Chris Dixon captured the 400 meter hurdles in 2006.

Leading the Blue Hens will be Jeremy Simkins in the hurdles, Will Jurkowski in the middle distance, Brad Dodson (at right) in the distance, Conrad Rapp in the pole vault, and John Viotto, Dave Schwartz, Dave Gyurina, Chase Renoll, and Doug Alpers in the throwing events. Renoll is the team’s top returning CAA finish after placing third in the shot put and fifth in the discus at last year’s meet.
