University of Delaware Track Teams Star in Pole Vault, Relays at Colonial Relays, Penn Invitational Saturday

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s track and field teams excelled in the pole vault and in the relay events as they competed at both the Colonial Relays at William & Mary at the University of Pennsylvania Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Delaware had one champion on the day as junior Laura Chirico captured the women’s pole vault at the Penn Invitational with a leap of 12-5 1/2, the second best mark school history. Blue Hen teammate Kelli McDonald was the runner-up with the same height of 12-5 1/2 but Chirico took the title based on fewer misses. The Delaware men also had their top performance in the pole vault at Penn as Conrad Rapp (at right) placed third with a height of 14-11.

The Blue Hens also posted seven top 10 finishes by their relays teams on the day. Leading the way was the men’s.

Also for the Hens, the men’s 4 x 800 meter relay team placed third at Penn with a time of 8:03.51, the women’s 4 x 100 meter team of Kristi Cox, Asha Quant, Kayla Hennessy, and Cristine Marquez was fourth at the Colonial Relays in 47.23, the women’s 4 x 1,500 meter relay team of Christina Antonopoulos, Kellyn Wright, Karen Mandrachia, and Cassie White was sixth at the Colonial Relays in 19:46.56, and the women’s 4 x 200 meter relay team of Quant, Marquez, Cox, and Hennessy was sixth at the Colonial Relays at 1:43.48.

Also, the women’s distance medley relay team of Christine Sloat, Alex Francis, Yianna Antonopoulos, and Julia Somers was seventh at the Colonial Relays with a school record time of 12:23.87, the men’s 4 x 100 meter relay team was seventh at Penn in 45.40, and the men’s 4 x 800 meter relay team of Tim Brock, Brad Dodson, Will Jurkowski, and Mike Zeberkiewicz was 10th at the Colonial Relays in 7:49.56.

Also for the Blue Hen women, Amanda Marshall was second in the hammer (150-7), second in the discus (136-2), and eighth in the shot put (39-6) at Penn, Quant was sixth in the 100 meters at the Colonial Relays (12.49), Hennessy was sixth at the 100 meter hurdles at the Colonial Relays (14.66), and Annie Fulton was ninth in the triple jump at Penn (36-7 1/2).

Also for the UD men, George Vallone was seventh in the pole vault at Penn (14-5 1/4), Jeremy Simkins was eighth in the 400 meter hurdles at Penn (56.40), Chase Renoll was eighth in the discus at the Colonial Relays (140-8), and Alex Gambogi was 10th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at Penn (9:51.33).
