PHILADELPHIA -- A ninth place finish in the women’s pole vault by Laura Chirico and a ninth place finish by Jared Wasser in the men’s shot put highlighted participation by the University of Delaware track and field teams at the annual Penn Relays Thursday and Friday at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field.
The Delaware women took part in six races while the Blue Hen men participated in five events. Delaware’s top finish in track events was a third place finish in their heat by the women’s 4 x 100 meter relay team of Brittany Wright, Asha Quant, Daniella Price, and Liz Harvin in a time of 49.05. West Virginia won the heat with a time of 47.22.
Chirico placed ninth in the pole vault with a leap of 11-feet while Wasser finished ninth in the shot put with a toss of 50-4 1/2. Princeton’s Jessica Kloss won the pole vault with a leap of 11-11 3/4 while Monmouth’s Nick Williams won the shot put with a throw of 56-6 3/4.
Also for the Delaware women, Kelli McDonald was 12th in the pole vault with a jump of 11-0, Asha Quant finished 16th in the long jump with a leap of 18-5 3/4 (Tisifnee Taylor of Monmouth won with a distance of 20-4), the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Cristine Marquez, Quant, Daniella Price, and Liz Harvin placed fifth overall with a time of 3:51.97, the third best time in school history. Monmouth won the heat with a clocking of 3:48.00. The Delaware 4 x 200 meter relay team of Brittany Wright, Quant, Price, and Harvin placed seventh with a time of 1:42.40. Texas Christian won the race in a time of 1:33.21.
Also for the Delaware men, Matt Guida (at right) was 12th in the pole vault with a leap of 14-7 1/4 (Rob Ludwig of UMBC with a jump of 16 3/4) while Gregg Cantwell was 28th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:58.71 and Kyle Schmid was 34th in the event with a time of 15:02.50. (Jon Anderson of Army won with a time of 14:21.7.
In the relay events, the Delaware placed ninth in the 4 x 100 with time of 43.76 (Oklahoma won with a time of 40.40). The UD team consisted of Scott Vari, M.J. Rawls, Chris Johnson, and Nick Morrissey. The 4 x 2000 meter relay team of Steven Jackson, Morrissey, Alex Tingue, and Rawls sprinted to a time of 1:34.60 but lost to Middle Tennessee in a time of 1:23.83.
