PRINCETON, NJ -- One of the largest University of Delaware outdoor track and field contingents in recent years will be competing at the IC4A and ECAC regionals this weekend at Princeton University’s William Weaver Stadium.
A total of 15 Blue Hens student-athletes will be competing in the three-day meet which begins Friday, May 12 and continues through Sunday, May 14. All competitors, which includes NCAA Division I schools from Maine to North Carolina, advanced to the meet after reaching qualifying times, heights, or distances during the 2006 outdoor season.
For the Delaware men under head coach Jim Fischer at the IC4A meet, senior Kyle Casella (Bishop Eustace/Lindenwold, NJ) will open competition Saturday in the hammer throw at 1 p.m., the 4 x 100 meter relay team of sophomore Scott Vari (St. Mark’s/Wilmington, DE), junior Chris Dixon (Hempfield/Manheim, PA), senior Charlie Williams (Powhatan/Powhatan, VA), and freshman Frank Mancuso (Longwood/Ridge, NY) will compete Saturday in the trials at 3 p.m., junior Brad Dodson (Martinsburg/Martinsburg, WV - at right) and senior Sam MacKenzie (Groton Central, NY/Newark, DE) will take part in the 1,500 meters at 3:20 p.m., Vari will take part in the 100 meter trials Saturday at 4:30 p.m., and Dixon will run in the 400 intermediate hurdles trials Saturday at 5:20 p.m. Junior Jared Wasser (Wootton/North Potomac, MD) will compete in the shot put Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
For the Blue Hen women under head coach Sue McGrath-Powell at the ECAC meet, the 4 x 100 meter relay team of sophomore Paula Green (Polytech/Milford, DE), junior Asha Quant (Holy Cross/Willingboro, NJ), junior Brittany Wright (Eastern/Voorhees, NJ), freshman Michelle Gomes (University/Orlando, FL), and sophomore Rayna Horsey (Woodbridge/Bridgeville, DE) will compete Saturday in the trials at 10:30 a.m., senior Casey Bennett (Shelton/Shelton, CT) will compete in the pole vault Saturday at 11 a.m., Gomes will run in the 100 meter trials Saturday at 11:35 a.m., and junior Rachel Young (Sparta/Sparta, NJ) will compete in the shot put Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
In addition to this week’s meet, Dixon (400 hurdles) and Bennett (pole vault) have also qualified to compete at the NCAA East Regionals May 26-27 at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, NC. Dixon qualified by capturing the 400 meter hurdles title at the Colonial Athletic Association meet back in April while Bennett, who also competed at last year’s NCAA East Regional and placed 20th in the pole vault, qualified by reaching a height of 12-feet, 5 1/2 inches earlier this season.
