Delaware Finishes Sixth At CAA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships; Dixon Wins 400 Meter Hurdles

RICHMOND, VA - The University of Delaware men’s outdoor track and field team finished sixth with 66 points while the women were eighth with 41 points as the Blue Hens competed in the second and final day of the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association Championships Saturday on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth.

The host Rams won the men’s title with 181 points, followed by defending champion UNC Wilmington (129.5), William & Mary (158), Northeastern (111.5), George Mason (83), Delaware, James Madison (31.5), and Georgia State (12). William & Mary won its sixth consecutive women’s title with 174.5 points, ahead of Northeastern (129.5), UNC Wilmington (119.5), James Madison (112), George Mason (75.5), Georgia State (74), Virginia Commonwealth (53), Delaware, and Towson (37).

Chris Dixon (at right) led the Delaware men’s team as he won the 400 meter hurdles in 52.99 to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Regionals in May. Brad Dodson (above) placed second in the 1500 meter run in 3:51.24, while Sam MacKenzie was third in the same event in 3:53.27. The Delaware 4x400 meter relay team of Frank Mancuso, Charlie Williams, Steven Jackson and Dixon was third in its vent in 3:18.44, while Jared Wasser came in third in the shot put with a throw of 51’3.75”.

Will Jurkowski finished fourth in the 800 meter run in 1:54.80 for the Blue Hens, while the 4x100 meter relay team of Scott Vari, Dixon, Mancuso and Williams placed fifth in its race in 42.51. Williams was sixth in the 400 meter dash in 49.09, while Dodson finished sixth in the 800 meter run in 1:54.88 and Anthony DiUlio placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 140’10”. Andrew Lynch was eighth in the shot put with a throw of 46’10.75” and 10th in the discus with a throw of 135’11”, while MacKenzie was ninth in the 800 meter run in 1:54.88.

The Delaware women were led by Casey Bennett, who finished second in the pole vault with a mark of 11’5.75” after winning the event last year. Rachel Young finished third in the shot put with a throw of 43’6”, while the Blue Hen 4x400 meter relay team of Brittany Wright, Michelle Gomes, Paula Green and Rayna Horsey finished third in its event in 47.31.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Wright, Green, Alexi Capsouras and Asha Quant placed fifth in its race in 3:55.33, while Stephanie Cronk was fifth in the discus with a throw of 123’3”. Capsouras was sixth in the 400 meter hurldles in 1:04.75 and seventh in the 100 meter hurdles in 14.84, while Leslie Lynch finished eighth in the discus with a throw of 119’11’ and Amanda Marshall placed ninth in the discus with a throw of 118’2”.

Both Delaware teams return to action on April 27-29 when the Blue Hens compete in the Penn Relays.
