Delaware Men Bring Home Outdoor Track Title
May 6, 2000

DEDHAM, MA -- Thanks in big part to a pair of wins by senior Mike DiGennaro, the University of Delaware men's track team ended New Hampshire's four-year reign and won the America East Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship team title Saturday at Solomon Track.

The University of Delaware women finished sixth in the meet as Vermont snapped Northeastern's six-year title run.

DiGennaro (Essex, MA/Hamilton-Wenham) won the 5,000 meters with a time 14:44.67 and the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:13.15 to pace the Hens. Also earning conference championships individually were senior Tom Marando (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) in the shot put (51' 11.75"), freshman Ben Thuma (Harrisburg, PA/Northern York) in the discus (151' 10") and sophomore Jamin Elliott (Portsmouth, VA/Churchland) in the triple jump. Elliott's mark of 49' 3.75", as well as Marando's mark in the shot put, were good enough to qualify them for the IC4A Championships at Princeton, NJ, May 18-21. The Blue Hens also won the 4x800-meter relay.

In addition, Sam Yarrington qualified for the IC4A's in the hammer throw, as did Andrew Palm in the javelin.

On the women's side, sophomore Annemarie Quinn (Wallingford, PA/Strath-Haven) was the lone individual champion. She won the high jump with a mark of 1.69 meters (5' 6-1/2"), which also qualified her for the ECAC Championships at Princeton, NJ May 18-21.

Caron Marra's (Newark, DE/Newark) third-place finish in the 3,000, Caltha Seymour's (Hockessin, DE/A.I. DuPont) second-place finish in the hammer and Carol Oliveri's (Brick, NJ/St. Rose) second-place finish in the pole vault were also enough to qualify them for the ECAC meet, as well.

The men's title was the first for Delaware since 1994. The Blue Hens finished second at the outdoor championships in 1997 and 1999.

Delaware's Jim Fischer was named America East Men's Outdoor Track Coach of the Year. Ed Kusiak of Vermont earned the women's honor. It was the third time that Fischer has earned the honor.
