Hens Open Season; Quinn 3rd in High Jump at Florida Relays


NEWARK, DE – The University of Delaware men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams opened their 2000 spring seasons at the University of Florida Relays and at the Navy Invitational this past weekend.

At the Florida Relays Saturday at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Delaware’s Mike DiGennaro (Hamilton-Wenham/Essex, MA) placed sixth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 9:21.67 for the men while the Blue Hens’ Annemarie Quinn (Strath-Haven/Wallingford, PA) was third in the high jump (5-6), Caron Marra (Newark HS) was seventh in the 1,500 meters (4:41.79), Aimee Alexander (Carmel/Stormville, NY) was 12th in the 3,000 meters (10:04.82), and Caltha Seymour (A.I. duPont HS) was 15th in the hammer throw (158-7) for the UD women.

At the Navy Invitational in Annapolis Saturday, both the Delaware men and women placed fourth in the five-team dual meet.

In the men’s section, Navy was first with 219 points followed by Ohio (148), Maine (94), Delaware (72), and Colgate (51). On the women’s side, Navy took first place honors with 206.5 points followed by Ohio (190.5), Maine (125), Delaware (79), and Colgate (67).

For the Delaware men, Sam Yarrington was second in the hammer (175-9), the 4 x 100 meter relay team was third (43.12), Ben Thuma was third in the discus (143-1) and fifth in the hammer (148-0), Tom Marando was fourth in the shot put (48-1 ¾), Andrew Palm was fourth in the javelin (171-11), Asher Ailey was fourth in the 200 meters (22.38), Ben Cosgrove was fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (56.93), Rashaun Davis was fifth in the long jump (20-1 ¾), the 4 x 400 meter relay team was fifth (3:23.82), Brandon Jones was sixth in the 100 meters (11.20), and Chris Miller was sixth in the long jump (20-0 ¼).

For the Delaware women at Navy, Michelle Perno was second in the discus (124-4), Jen Lublanecki was second in the 200 meters (25.63), Melissa Calvanico was third in the shot put (38-9), Jennie Chiller was fourth in the hammer (119-3), Tricia McNair was fourth in the pole vault (7-6), and Lindsay Taylor was fourth in the javelin (108-3).

 Both Blue Hen teams will compete at the Colonial Relays at William & Mary this weekend.
