Yarrington 8th at Penn Relays Hammer; Marando, GoodHart Leads Hens at Millersville


MILLERSVILLE, PA -- Senior Caron Marra (Newark HS) was the University of Delaware's lone individual champion with a first place finish in the 1,500 meters and junior Carol Oliveri (St. Rose/Brick, NJ) tied her own school record by placing third in the pole vault to lead the Blue Hens at the 22nd annual Millersville (Pa.) University Metrics Meet Saturday at Biemesderfer Stadium.

In other UD track and field action Saturday, Sam Yarrington (Quaker Valley/Sewickley, PA) placed ninth in the hammer throw at the Penn Relays with a toss of 183-10. Auburn's Ryan Kavanaugh won the event with a throw of 203-05.

At Millersville, the Delaware men placed eighth overall in the 20-team field with 35 points while the Blue Hen women were eighth out of 15 teams. Kutztown (Pa.) edged Millersville for both the men's and women's team titles.

Marra continued to dominate the middle distance events for the Blue Hens as she placed first in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:43.38. Oliveri placed third in the pole vault, matching her own school record with a leap of 10-6.

Also for the UD women, Jen Lublanecki (West Morris Central/Long Valley, NJ) was second in the 200m (25.79), Melissa Calvanico (Tottenville/Staten Island, NY) was fourth in the hammer (131-10) and sixth in the discus (128-5), Amber MacNeill (Downingtown/West Chester, PA) was fourth in the 800 meters, and Jennie Chiller (Sharon, Mass. HS) was fifth in the hammer (130-6).

Leading the Blue Hen men was Tom Marando (St. Mark's HS), who was second in the shot put (50-6) and fifth in the hammer (144-6), and Mike Goodhart (Warwick/Lititz, PA) who was third in both the hammer (152-2) and discus (153-3).

Also for the Hens, John Marino (Iona Prep/Yonkers, NY) was fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (15.86), Jeff Emery (Ramsey, NJ HS) was fifth in the long jump (20-9), Eric Sands (Tunkhannock, Pa. HS) was sixth in the shot put (49-0), and Ben Thuma (Northern York/Harrisburg, PA).

Both teams will compete at the America East championships next Saturday at Northeastern University in Dedham, MA.
