DiGennaro Earns All-East Honors in 3,000m Steeplechase to Lead Blue Hens in Season Finale


PRINCETON, NJ -- The University of Delaware men's and women's outdoor track and field squads closed out the 2000 season competing at the IC4A and ECAC Championships Sunday at Princeton University's Weaver Stadium.

In Sunday's action, Delaware senior Eric Sands (Tunkhannock, Pa. HS) placed 19th in the discus with a toss of 141-9 while sophomore Andrew Palm (South Kingstown/Kingston, RI) placed 22nd in the javelin with a throw of 182-3. As a team, Delaware placed tied for 36th with a score of six points. Georgetown was the overall team champion.

For the Delaware women Sunday, sophomore Annemarie Quinn (Strath-Haven/Wallingford, PA) placed tied for 11th in the high jump with a leap of 5-4 1/2 while senior Caltha Seymour (A.I. duPont HS) was 16th in the hammer throw (154-5), and senior Caron Marra (Newark HS) was 19th in the 3,000 meters (10:01.72). Delaware did not score points in the meet. Georgetown also won the women's team title.

In earlier action, senior Mike DiGennaro (Hamilton-Wenham/Essex, MA) highlighted the first two days for the Blue Hens by earning All-East honors in the 3,000 meter steeplechase Friday evening. DiGennaro, the two-time defending America East 3,000 meter steeplechase champion, earned All-East honors after placing third in the event in a time of 9:03.95, three seconds behind his own school record. He led the race until the final lap. DiGennaro's finish is the best by a Blue Hen outdoor track and field performer at the IC4A meet since Wade Coleman placed second in the discus in 1993. DiGennaro was 14th in the event in 1999.

Also for the Delaware men, junior Sam Yarrington (Quaker Valley/Sewickley, PA) placed ninth in the hammer throw with a toss of 181-9, senior Robb Munro (Sidney Central/Sidney, NY) was 21st in the 3,000m steeplechase in a time of 9:21.73, senior Tom Marando (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) was 22nd in the shot put with a toss of 49-5 3/4, and the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Ed Montalvo (Bridgewater-Raritan/Bridgewater, NJ), Brandon Jones (Pennsbury/Newtown, PA), Ishmael Fontaine (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands), and Asher Ailey (West Windsor-Plainsboro/Plainsboro, NJ) placed third in their heat in a time of 42.37 but did not advance to the finals.

For the Delaware women Friday, sophomore Aimee Alexander (Carmel/Stormville, NY) placed 16th in the 5,000 meters in a time of 17:28.34.
