University of Delaware Men's Lacrosse Assistant Coach John Grant updated 8/25/00
John Grant, the most honored player in University of Delaware men's lacrosse history, begins his second season with the Blue Hen men's lacrosse squad in 2001. Grant, 25, one of the world's top lacrosse players, assists Bob Shillinglaw with the Blue Hen squad while completing his degree in physical education. A native of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada (Kenner HS), Grant completed one of the most outstanding seasons ever recorded by a collegiate player in 1999. Grant led the Blue Hens to their best season ever with a 14-2 record, a No. 6 USILA ranking, and a berth in the NCAA quarterfinals before falling to eventual national champion Virginia. Grant led the nation in scoring with 110 points on 56 goals and 54 points, becoming just the ninth player in NCAA Division I varsity history to reach the 100-point plateau in a single season. He became the first Delaware player ever to earn first team USILA All-American honors and earned the prestigious Enners Award as USILA National Player of the Year and the Turnbull Award as the USILA National Attackman of the Year. He also was named the America East conference Player of the Year and scored two goals in the USILA North-South All-Star Game. Grant played in 1996 at SUNY-Morrisville and in 1997 at Sir Sanford Fleming Junior College in Canada before coming to Delaware. In his first season with the Blue Hens in 1998, Grant earned honorable mention All-American honors after scoring 40 goals and 27 assists to rank No. 9 in the NCAA in points scored per game. In just two seasons at Delaware, Grant used his size and masterful stick work to set UD records for assists in a season (54), points in a season (110; breaking the old record by 32 points), most points per game in a career (5.53), and most points per game in a season (6.47 in 1999). He ranks No. 6 on the all-time UD points list with 177 on 81 goals and 96 assists. Grant, who is a member of the Canadian National Team, was the No. 1 pick in the 1999 National Lacrosse League draft held in September and was named the league Rookie of the Year for the 2000 seasons.
