SUNSET BEACH, FL -- The No. 14 ranked University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team will be looking to open the season 2-0 Saturday as the Blue Hens travel to Florida to take on No. 18 UMBC in the inaugural Face Off For a Cause game.
The game, which is a rematch of last year’s NCAA quarterfinal battle won by Delaware 10-6 in Annapolis, MD, will begin at 12 noon and will be played at Fletcher High School. A live webcast of the game can be seen for free at www.synclive.com.
Proceeds from the game will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, whose mission is to raise the awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. Wounded Warrior Project is a non-profit organization.
Following the Delaware vs. UMBC men’s game, Pfeiffer University will take on Rollins in a women’s lacrosse game.
Delaware (1-0) opened the 2008 season with an 18-10 win over Saint Joseph’s last Saturday in Philadelphia as nine different players scored goals led by senior Vincent Giordano’s career-high five tallied. Curtis Dickson added two goals and two assists while Martin Cahill posted his first career hat trick with three goals and added an assist, Kevin Kaminski and Beau Davis each scored twice, and Pat Lombard added a goal and two assists.
Goalkeeper Tom Scherr posted 10 saves and redshirt freshman Anthony Ruiz, taking over Delaware’s faceoff duties for graduated two-time All-American and all-time NCAA record-holder Alex Smith, was solid, scoring a goal and winning 16 of his 26 faceoff attempts.
UMBC, which will be making its 2008 debut, posted a record of 11-6 last season and fell to Delaware in the NCAA quarterfinals. The Retrievers return five starters and 32 letterwinners and were picked No. 2 in the America East conference pre-season poll. UMBC lost its top three scorers from last year’s squad is led by top returning scorer Terry Kimener, who tallied 18 goals and 20 assists a year ago.
A strong defense is led by goalkeeper Jeremy Blevins, who recorded a 9.81 goals against average and a .552 save percentage.
