BALTIMORE -- Three members of the 14th ranked University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team have been named to the Warrior Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List.
Senior attackman Cam Howard, sophomore attackman Curtis Dickson, and sophomore midfielder Martin Cahill (at right) were among 51 NCAA men’s college lacrosse players listed as candidates for the Tewaaraton Trophy, the lacrosse equivalent of the Heisman Trophy and the pre-eminent lacrosse award which honors the top male and female collegiate lacrosse players in the nation.
The Tewaaraton Award Foundation, in conjunction with The University Club of Washington, DC, formally established the Tewaaraton Trophy on August 29, 2000. The trophy is now presented annually following the collegiate season at a banquet honoring the finalists and winners.
Howard, a senior from Wilmington, DE (Tatnall School), returns to the Blue Hen lineup after missing all but two games a year ago due to a knee injury. A three-time All-Colonial Athletic Association selection and an Inside Lacrosse/Face Off Yearbook pre-season All-American, he is Delaware’s active career leader in goals (67), assists (85), and points (152). His 85 assists ranks No. 5 all-time at Delaware while his 152 points place him No. 11 in UD annals.
Dickson, a sophomore from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia (Riverside HS) and a pre-season All-American, earned a spot on the CAA All-Rookie squad a year ago when he tallied 21 goals and seven assists and had four goals in an NCAA Tournament first round win over Virginia. He already leads the Hens in scoring this season with 12 goals and six assists and has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week twice.
Cahill, a sophomore from Malden, MA (The Governor’s Academy), opened the 2008 season with career-high three goal efforts in wins vs. Saint Joseph’s and UMBC and also tallied a goal vs. Marist this past Saturday. He scored nine goals and had one assist as a freshman in 2007 and scored two more more goals three times.
Delaware was among only seven schools that had three or more players list on the watch list - joining defending national champion Johns Hopkins (four), 2007 national runner-up Duke (four), 2007 national semifinalist Cornell (three), 2007 NCAA Tournament participants Virginia (three) and Albany (three), and the Blue Hens’ Colonial Athletic Association foe Drexel (three).
Other CAA players listed on the watch list were Andrew Chapman, Bruce Bickford, and Steve Grossi of Drexel, Chris McDonald of Villanova, and Kevin Unterstein of Hofstra.
