KANSAS CITY, MO -- University of Delaware senior men’s lacrosse goalkeeper Tom Scherr (at right) has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, which honors excellence in athletics, academics, and service among NCAA Division I athletes.

The award, which honors student-athletes in eight different NCAA Division I sports, was launched in 2001 to honor the attributes of college basketball seniors who fulfill their entire athletic eligibility. Men’s lacrosse was added to the list last year with Cornell’s Matt McMonagle earning the award. CLASS is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School.

Scherr was among the original 20 finalists announced in March but was selected as one of the final 10 choices by a committee. He is joined by Michael Corbolotti and Danny Nathan of Cornell, Fletcher Gregory of North Carolina, Pat Grimm of Yale, Mike Leveille of Syracuse, Craig Massie of Army, Paul Rabil of Johns Hopkins, Brad Ross of Duke, and Ben Rubeor of Virginia.

Nationwide balloting by fans has already begun to determine the overall winner, who will receive the award at the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships at Foxborough, MA during Memorial Day weekend.

Fans can place their votes for their favorite candidates until May 5 by voting on-line at http://www.seniorclassaward.com.

“These 10 players are only among the nation’s best college lacrosse players, they are remarkable students and community members who have worked hard to accomplish great things both on and off the field,” said Bob Gfeller, Lowe’s Senior Vice-President of Marketing and Advertising. “Lowes is proud of its affiliation with the NCAA and college athletics, and we are pleased to help honor these individuals who have displayed a commitment to excellence as true student-athletes.”

Scherr, a goalkeeper from Owings Mills, MD (Mt. St. Joseph’s School), has led the Blue Hens to a current record of 8-4, including a 12-11 win over No. 10 Drexel Wednesday night that improved the team’s Colonial Athletic Association record to 1-1. Delaware travels to CAA foe Hofstra Saturday at 1 p.m.

Scherr, a third-year starter in goal for the Blue Hens and a two-time team captain, is an honor student as a chemical engineering major with a minor in mathematical sciences and economics at Delaware. He plans to enroll in medical school after graduation in May. He has been involved in several academic fellowships on campus and is a CoSIDA Academic All-American candidate.

He currently ranks among the nation’s top goalkeepers with a 9.12 goals allowed per game average and for save percentage with a mark of .591 on 156 saves. His 33 career goalkeeper victories rank among the top current players in the NCAA and his 527 career saves ranks No. 6 all-time in Delaware men’s lacrosse history.
