HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The University of Delaware allowed five man-advantage goals, including two by Dan Stein, and dropped a 11-8 men’s lacrosse decision to No. 20 Hofstra Saturday afternoon at Shuart Stadium.
Delaware, which was coming off a 12-11 win over No. 10 Drexel Wednesday night, tied the game at 4-4 midway through the second quarter but Hofstra scored four of the next five goals, including three of them on man-up opportunities, to take control and held on for the win to stay atop the CAA standings.
The Blue Hens (8-5, 2-2 CAA), who lost for the third time in the last four outings, got another big effort from Curtis Dickson, who scored three goals and dished out an assist, while Vincent Giordano (at right) had three goals and an assist and Martin Cahill and Cam Howard each scored a goal.
Dickson, coming off a career-best six-goal effort in the win over Drexel, upped his NCAA-leading total to 41 for the season and extended his streak of scoring at least one goal to 22 straight games, the fourth longest streak in UD history and longest for a Delaware player since the 1981 season.
Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw tied an NCAA record for career coaching appearances as he coached his 510th career game, tying the mark held by Jack Emmer, who coached 510 games between 1970 and 2005 at Cortland State, Washington & Lee, and Army. Shillinglaw is now 272-238 in his 33rd season as a college head coach and ranks No. 4 on the all-time active win list.
Hofstra (6-4, 4-1 CAA), which won its third straight game, got three goals and two assists from Michael Unterstein while Jay Card scored three times and dished out an assist, and Stein and Dooley each scored twice. The Pride scored five man-up goals in nine opportunities on the way to the victory.
Delaware continued its struggles at Hofstra as the Blue Hens lost at Shuart Stadium for the sixth straight time since the 1999 season and fell to 3-10 all-time in Hempstead, NY.
Hofstra jumped out to a 3-1 lead on a goal by Anthony Muscarella with 5:01 left in the opening quarter but the Hens reeled off three of the next four scores - on goals by Giordano, Howard, and Dickson - and tied the score at 4-4 with 8:44 left in the second stanza. Dooley and Stein followed with man-up goals in the final five minutes of the half to give the Pride a 6-4 lead at the break.
Delaware cut the lead to 6-5 on a goal by Dickson six minutes into the second half, but Card and Unterstein answered with goals in the final 4:33 of the third quarter to up the lead to 8-5.
The Hens rallied once again as Giordano scored 33 seconds into the final stanza and Dickson tallied his third goal with 8:48 left to play to narrow the gap to 8-7. But that would be the closest the Hens would get as Unterstein started a 3-0 run with a goal 26 seconds later and Dooley and Card also added goals to clinch the win for the Pride.
The Hens will return to action next Saturday, April 19, when they host CAA foe Robert Morris at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium. The game will mark the celebration of 60 years of Delaware men’s lacrosse.
