Six University of Delaware Players Named to All-CAA Men’s Lacrosse Team; Dickson, Cahill, Crowther-Washburn First Team Picks

RICHMOND, VA -- The University of Delaware placed six players, including first team selections Curtis Dickson (top right), Martin Cahill, and Evan Crowther-Washburn (bottom right), on the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association All-Star teams announced Friday by the league office.

The selections were made from a vote of the seven league coaches. Drexel goalkeeper Bruce Bickford was named the Player of the Year, Drexel’s Chris Bates was named Coach of the Year, Hofstra’s Kevin Unterstein was named Defensive Player of the Year, and Hofstra’s Jay Card was named Rookie of the Year.

In addition to Dickson, Cahill, and Evan Crowther-Washburn, other Blue Hen players honored were second team All-CAA goalkeeper Tom Scherr and CAA All-Rookie picks in longstick midfielder Tim Langmaid and defenseman Pat Dowling.

Dickson, a sophomore from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia (Riverside High School), was among the top offensive players in the country throughout the season and led the CAA in goals scored and total points. Dickson, who earned CAA All-Rookie team honors a year ago, led the Blue Hens with 62 points on 46 goals and 16 assists and ended the season with a goal-scoring streak of 25 straight games, the third longest in school history. A finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy as the top player in the nation, Dickson scored three or more goals eight times on the season with a career-high six vs. league champion Drexel.

Cahill, a sophomore from Malden, MA (The Governor’s Academy), was another offensive force for the Blue Hens in 2008. Part of the team’s first midfield unit, he ranked second on the team with 29 goals and was fourth in scoring with 38 points. He scored at least one goal in all 15 regular season game and had a season-high three goals in six different contests and had a career-high six points vs. Robert Morris.

athlete photoCrowther-Washburn, a senior co-captain from Annapolis, MD (Severn School), earned all-conference honors for the first time in his career in leading a Blue Hen defense that led the league in caused turnovers and ranked fourth in total defense. A pre-season All-American by Inside Lacrosse, he started each of the firsts 14 games before suffering a season-ending knee injury vs. Robert Morris back on April 19. He dished out one assist on the season, scooped up 15 groundballs, and ranked fourth on the team with 13 caused turnovers.

Scherr, a senior goalkeeper from Owings Mills, MD (Mt. St. Joseph’s High School), capped an outstanding career in the nets as a third-year starter. A three-time CAA All-Tournament selection and a CoSIDA Academic All-American candidate, Scherr posted 205 saves and ranked second in the league in save percentage (.584) while his 9.36 goals against average was fourth among league netminders. His 8.53 career goals against average is the best in school history while his 576 career saves ranks fourth. He is one of 10 finalists nationally for the Lowes Senior CLASS Award which recognizes outstanding contributions in the classroom, the playing field, and in the community.

Dowling, a redshirt freshman defenseman from Fairfield, CT (Fairfield Ludlowe High School), was one of just two defenders named to the CAA All-Rookie team. After sitting out during the 2007 season, he earned a starting spot in 2008 and was one of just five players on the squad to start every game. He led the team with 18 caused turnovers and ranked fifth with 35 groundballs.

Langmaid, a freshman from Danvers, MA (The Governor’s Academy), was the lone freshman longstick midfielder selected to the CAA All-Rookie team. He played in all 15 games with two starts in 2008 and contributed two goals, including one in the CAA semifinal setback to Hofstra, 12 groundballs, and six caused turnovers.

Delaware finished the 2008 season with a 9-7 record under 30th year head coach Bob Shillinglaw and placed third in the CAA standings with a record of 3-3. The Hens earned the No. 3 seed in the CAA Tournament and dropped a 9-7 decision to No. 2 Hofstra in the semifinals. Delaware, which won the 2007 CAA title and advanced to the NCAA national semifinals, posted its fifth straight winning season.
