RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware men’s lacrosse freshman D.J. Widlake has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for his performance for the period ending March 19.
Widlake (at right), a midfielder from Baltimore, MD (Mt. St. Joseph’s High School), scored two goals on just two shots in the Blue Hens’ 9-8 loss to No. 7 Georgetown Wednesday night in the team’s only action of the week.
The Blue Hens, ranked No. 14 in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Top 20 poll, will resume play this Saturday when Delaware (5-2) opens its CAA schedule hosting defending league champion Hofstra (1-3, 0-0 CAA) at Rullo Stadium at 7 p.m. The Hens will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak - both to Top 10 ranked opponents - while the Pride will be looking to end a three-game losing skein.
Widlake, who entered the game having scored just one goal in three career appearances, sparked the Blue Hen comeback that fell just short against the Hoyas. He scored a goal in the second quarter with 4:12 left in the half to cut the lead to 5-2 and scored the first goal of the second half just over two minutes into the third quarter to narrow the margin to 5-3. Delaware came back to take an 8-7 lead in the third quarter but could not hold on down the stretch.
Widlake, a four-year varsity player at Mt. St. Joseph, also recorded an groundball vs. Georgetown. He now has scored three goals in four career games for the Blue Hens.
In addition to Widlake, the CAA honored Drexel sophomore attackman Ron Garling as Player of the Week. Garling had five goals in the Dragons’ 16-13 loss to No. 3 Albany Saturday.
