VILLANOVA, PA -- Freshman Curtis Dickson scored four goals, including two in the final seven minutes, as the No. 17 ranked University of Delaware scored the final four goals of the game to capture a wild 19-18 victory over host Villanova in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s lacrosse game Saturday night at Villanova Stadium.
The Blue Hens (7-5, 2-2 CAA), who snapped a two-game losing streak by defeating the Wildcats for the third straight time, scored seven goals in the final quarter and rallied back from an 18-15 deficit over the final seven minutes.
Dickson started the comeback with a goal with 7:05 left to play and converted the game-winner off a feed from Jordan Hall with 2:49 left to play. The Hens had tied the game at 18-18 on a goal by Adam Zuder-Havens (at right) with 6:06 left.
Zuder-Havens finished with four goals and two assists, Dickson had four goals and an assist, Dan Deckelbaum added three goals, Hall had two goals and two assists, and Vincent Giordano added two goals and an assist.
Warren Mayberry replaced starting goalkeeper Tommy Scherr in the second half and picked up the win, posting eight saves. The game’s 37 goals matched the Blue Hens’ highest scoring game since defeating Rutgers 19-18 back in 1999.
Villanova (5-6, 1-3 CAA), which lost for the second time in the last three games, got four goals from Chris MacDonald and three goals and an assist from Eric Heidenberger. Andy German added two goals and four assists, Mike Haas contributed two goals and two assists, and Eric Webber chipped in with two goals and an assist.
Delaware senior Alex Smith, the NCAA leader in faceoff percentage and the all-time NCAA leader in career faceoffs won and attempted, won 21 of 40 faceoffs, setting a new school record for faceoffs attempted in a game. The 40 attempts was just one shy of the NCAA record of 41 by Steve Vecchione of Johns Hopkins vs. Syracuse in 1992.
The teams played to a 4-4 tie after the first quarter and combined for 10 goals in the second stanza as Villanova took a 10-8 lead into halftime as the Wildcats scored the final three goals, including one by Mark Scioscia with just seven seconds left.
Delaware regained the lead at 11-10 on a goal by Kevin Kaminski with 9:34 left in the third quarter, but Villanova scored five of the next six goals, including two by MacDonald, to take a 16-11 lead. Hall scored with just three seconds left in the third stanza to cut the gap to 16-12.
Dickson and Giordano scored during the first minute of the final quarter to cut the lead to 16-14, and after Heidenberger scored for Villanova with 13:16 left, Delaware pulled to within 17-15 on defenseman Rob Smith’s third goal of the year with 13:01 to play.
Atkins scored for Villanova with 10 minutes left to increase the lead to 18-15, but that would be the Wildcats’ final tally of the game as the Hens mounted their comeback. Dickson, Deckelbaum, and Zuder-Havens each scored in a span of 61 seconds to tie the game at 18-18 with 6:06 left and Dickson notched the game-winner just over three minutes later.
