NEW YORK -- Former University of Delaware lacrosse standouts Matt Alrich (top right) and Bryan Barrett (bottom right) have been selected to the United States Men’s Indoor National Lacrosse Team that will compete at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships this May in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Alrich, an All-Colonial Athletic Association attackman who played for the Blue Hens in 2000-04, and Barrett, an All-America East defenseman who played at Delaware in 1998-01, are currently playing professionally for the New York Titans of the National Lacrosse League.
The two were among 33 players selected to the team. The roster will be divided into a 23-man active roster and a 10-player reserve list shortly before the tournament. The tournament will be held May 14-20 at the Halifax Metro Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The U.S. team will play Australia May 14, Iceland May 15, and Canada May 16. The tournament field also includes teams from England, Ireland, Czech Republic, Scotland, and the Iroquois Nationals. Teams that advance will compete in the quarterfinals May 18, semifinals May 19, and the finals May 20.
“After a four-month selection process, we are satisfied that the team we have assembled is both deserving of the honor, as well as committed to representing the United States in Halifax,” said U.S. National Team head coach Tom Ryan. “Indoor lacrosse has come a long way in the U.S. over the past decade. I am confident that this group will do everything we can to make our friends and families proud.”
Alrich, a native of Timonium, MD, was a two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association selection who was picked in the fourth round of the Major League Lacrosse draft in 2004. He led the CAA in scoring in 2004 with 34 goals and 12 assists and ranks No. 17 all-time in UD history with 83 goals and No. 26 with 103 points. A 6-3, 220 lb. defenseman, he is currently in his first season with the New York Titans after playing the 2005 and 2006 seasons with the San Jose Stealth.
Barrett, a native of Bel Air, MD, was a three-year starter on defense for the Blue Hens and played in 45 career games with 38 starts. He recorded 131 groundballs during his career. He earned first team All-America East conference honors in both 2000 and 2001 and played a key role for the 1999 team that won the America East title and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. A 6-1, 220 lb. defenseman, he is currently in his first season with the Titans after playing the previous five seasons with the Philadelphia Wings.
Alrich and Barrett are among six former Blue Hens players currently participating in the National Lacrosse League. Keevin Galbraith is also a member of the New York Titans, Luke Wiles plays for the San Jose Stealth, and John Grant and Scott Evans are members of the Rochester Knighthawks.
