University of Delaware Standout Alex Smith on Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List

WASHINGTON, DC -- University of Delaware senior midfielder Alex Smith, the nation’s top faceoff specialist each of the last three seasons, has been one of 60 men’s lacrosse players named to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List.

The Tewaaraton Trophy, the lacrosse equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, is the pre-eminent lacrosse award and honors the top male and female collegiate lacrosse players in the nation. The Tewaaraton Award Foundation, in conjunction with The University Club of Washington, DC, formally established the Tewaaraton Trophy on August 29, 2000. The trophy is now presented annually following the collegiate season at a banquet honoring the finalists and winners.

Smith (at right), a senior midfielder and faceoff specialist from Timonium, MD (Boy’s Latin High School), currently leads all NCAA Division I players in faceoff winning percentage (156-39, .800) and groundballs per game (10.9) and has led the Blue Hens to a 6-3 record and No. 14 national ranking by the United States Intercollegiate Coaches Association. He also was named to the Watch List prior to the 2006 season.

A two-time All-American and three-time All-Colonial Athletic Association selection, Smith led the NCAA in faceoff pct. in both 2005 and 2006 and currently holds NCAA Division I national records for faceoff winning percentage in a game (21 for 21 vs. Wagner in 2006) and career faceoff victories (854).
