 BALTIMORE -- The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team will take a No. 17 national ranking into this Wednesday’s Colonial Athletic Association semifinal game as the Blue Hens will travel to No. 15 Drexel May 2 at Vidas Field in Philadelphia.
Delaware (9-5, 3-2 CAA) will be the tournament No. 3 seed and take on the No. 2 seed Dragons (11-4) at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to play in the CAA championship game Saturday night against the winner of the other semifinal game featuring top seed and No. 14 Towson vs. No. 4 seed Hofstra. The winner earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Hens, who enter the semifinals riding a three-game win streak following a 19-4 win over Robert Morris in the team’s regular season finale Saturday, moved up one spot to No. 17 in both the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and Nike/Inside Lacrosse Top 20 polls announced Monday. Delaware earned 33 points in the USILA poll and was tied with Massachusetts with 57 points in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll.
Undefeated Cornell (12-0) remained at the top spot in both polls once again, earning all 11 first place votes in the USILA poll and all 15 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse rankings. The rest of the top six was identical in both polls with Duke at No. 2 followed by Virginia, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and Princeton.
In the USILA poll, Navy and Maryland were tied at No. 7 followed by Notre Dame, North Carolina, Albany, Loyola, UMBC, Towson, Drexel, Colgate, Delaware, Bucknell, Syracuse, and Massachusetts. Hofstra was among five other teams receiving votes.
In the Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll, Maryland was at No. 7 and Navy and North Carolina were tied at No. 8. North Carolina was at No. 10 followed by Loyola, Albany, UMBC, Towson, Drexel, Colgate, Massachusetts and Delaware, Syracuse, and Bucknell. Hofstra was among three other schools receiving votes.
Delaware featured a balanced scoring attack led by Adam Zuder-Havens (25 goals, 7 assists - at right), Dan Deckelbaum (21 goals, 6 assists), and Jordan Hall (17 goals, 9 assists) while senior Rob Smith anchors the defense and two-time All-American Alex Smith continued to lead the nation in faceoff winning pct. (75.5 percent) and groundballs (9.5 per game). Goalkeeper Tommy Scherr allows 8.06 goals per game to go with a .557 save percentage.
