Delaware Men’s Lacrosse Continues Climb in National Polls; Will Travel to No. 5 Duke Friday

athlete photoBALTIMORE -- The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team, coming off a hard-fought 6-5 win over Hofstra in its Colonial Athletic Association opener Saturday night, continues to move up the national rankings as the Blue Hens improved to No. 12 in this week’s U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association coaches poll and to No. 14 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll announced Monday.

The Blue Hens (6-2), who snapped a two-game losing streak with the win over Hofstra, will travel to Durham, NC Friday to take on No. 5 ranked Duke at 3 p.m. The Blue Devils (6-2) are coming off a 6-4 win over Georgetown Saturday.

Delaware moved forward two spots to No. 12 in the USILA poll, earning 85 points. Cornell (6-0) remained at No. 1 and earned 10 of the 11 first place votes and 219 points. Albany (6-0) was at No. 2 with one first place vote and 209 points followed by Virginia, Navy, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Princeton, Army, and Maryland in the top 10. Navy is the only other undefeated team in NCAA Division I at 8-0, joining Cornell and Albany.

Loyola was at No. 11 followed by Delaware, Syracuse, Towson, North Carolina, Bucknell, Fairfield, Notre Dame, Stony Brook, and UMBC.

The Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll had Delaware up two spots to No. 14 with 104 points, just three points behind CAA foe Towson. Cornell remained at No. 1 with nine of the 14 first place votes. No. 2 Virginia, No. 3 Navy, and No. 4 Albany each received first place votes with Johns Hopkins, Duke, Princeton, Maryland, Georgetown, and Loyola rounding out the top 10.

Army was at No. 11 followed by Syracuse, Towson, Delaware, North Carolina, UMBC, Notre Dame, Bucknell, Fairfield, and Stony Brook in the top 20.

The Blue Hens, who have already faced two other top 10 teams this season with a 13-7 loss to then No. 4 Albany and a 9-8 setback to then No. 7 Georgetown, will be looking to capture their first win over a Top 10 team since 1999 this week vs. Duke. The Blue Hens, who have defeated Duke seven times in the last nine meetings, will play the Blue Devils for the first time since 1989.

Delaware is led by Dan Deckelbaum (13 goals, 6 assists), Adam Zuder-Havens (15g, 3a), NCAA faceoff leader Alex Smith (79.3 winning percentage) and goalkeeper Tommy Scherr, who ranks among the NCAA leaders in goals allowed average (6.08 per game) and save pct. (.606).
