Delaware Men’s Lacrosse Holds at No. 14 in USILA, Improves to No. 16 in Nike/Inside Lacrosse Top 20 Polls

DATE: March 19, 2007

This date in UD AthleticsBALTIMORE -- The University of Delaware’s hard-fought 9-8 men’s lacrosse loss to then No. 7 ranked Georgetown last week impressed the weekly top 20 voters, who kept the Hens at No. 14 in the United States Intercollege Lacrosse Association coaches poll and moved them up one spot to No. 16 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll announced Monday afternoon.

Delaware, which did not play this past weekend, will end a 10-day layoff this Saturday when the Blue Hens (5-2) open Colonial Athletic Association play at home vs. defending CAA champion Hofstra at 7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium. The Pride (1-3) earned votes in both polls but did not appear in among the top 20 teams.

The top three teams stayed the same in the USILA poll as Cornell (4-0) earned seven first place votes and 197 points overall to stay at No. 1, Albany (5-0) was at No. 2 with three first place votes and 191 points, and Johns Hopkins (4-1) remained at No. 3 with 171 points. Navy (6-0) moved up one spot to No. 4 while Duke (5-1) and Virginia (6-1) were tied at No. 5, Georgetown (4-1) stayed at No. 7, Army (4-1) moved up one spot to No. 8, Princeton (3-2) moved up one spot to No. 9, and Maryland (5-2) moved up one spot to No. 10.

Loyola was at No. 11, North Carolina and Fairfield were tied at No. 12, Delaware and Syracuse were tied at No. 14, and Bucknell, Towson, Brown, Notre Dame, and Stony Brook closed out the top 20.

Cornell remained at No. 1 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll with 272 points and eight first place votes while No. 2 Virginia (252; 2), No. 3 Johns Hopkins (250; 1), and No. 4 Navy (237; 3) each earned first place votes. Albany was at No. 5 with Duke, Georgetown, Princeton, Maryland, and Loyola rounding out the top 10. North Carolina was at No. 11 followed by Syracuse, Army, Fairfield, Towson, Delaware, Bucknell, Brown, Notre Dame, and Stony Brook.

Delaware, which had a school-record 12-game home winning streak snapped by Georgetown, will look to start a new streak Saturday in their CAA opener vs. Hofstra. Delaware will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak - both to top 10 opponents - while Hofstra has lost three straight since a season-opening win over Massachusetts.

The Blue Hens are led by leading scorers Adam Zuder-Havens (14 goals, 3 assists), Dan Deckelbaum (12 goals, 5 assists), and Jordan Hall (9 goals, 4 assists), and all-time NCAA faceoff victory leader Alex Smith, who has won 81.2 percent of his 160 faceoffs this season.
