PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Dan Deckelbaum (Owings Mills/Owings Mills, MD - at right) matched a career-high by scoring three goals and All-American Jordan Hall (Fleetwood Park/Surrey, British Columbia) and Marty Kupprion (Episcopal/Wallingford, PA) each tallied twice as No. 13 ranked University of Delaware jumped out to an eight-goal lead and held on for a 10-6 men’s lacrosse win over host Rutgers Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Hens remained unbeaten at 5-0 on the season and are off to their best start since the 1999 squad started out 8-0 on the way to a berth in the NCAA quarterfinals. The Hens downed Rutgers for the first time since 2002 after losing three straight. The Scarlet Knights fell to 1-1 on the season.

Delaware junior Cam Howard added a goal and two assists and Beau Davis contributed one goal and one assist to lead a balanced effort. Howard, who scored six points in each of the Hens’ last two victories, has now scored at least three points in every game this season and has scored a goal in nine straight games since the 2005 campaign. Blue Hen goalkeeper Tommy Scherr was outstanding in goal, posting 11 saves.

Devon Britts and Jeff Rommel each scored two goals for Rutgers while All-Americangoalkeeper candidate Greg Havalchak stopped seven shots. Delaware outshot Rutgers 34 28 and held a 35-31 advantage in groundballs.

Howard scored the game’s first goal just three minutes into the contest and neither team scored again until Rutgers knotted the game at 1-1 on Britts’ first goal just 46 seconds into the second stanza.

But Delaware dominated the rest of the way. Deckelbaum scored two goals just one minute and 39 seconds apart to start a 4-0 Blue Hen run to give UD the lead for good at 5 1. After Rutgers stopped the streak on Britts’ second goal with 5:53 left, the Hens took a 5-2 lead into intermission when Hall scored with just nine seconds left in the half.

A dominating third quarter by Delaware put the game away as the Hens scored the first four goals of the stanza to go up 10-2. Davis started the run by scoring 34 seconds into the half and Deckelbaum, Paul Rodriguez, and Kupprion each tallied a goal in a span of one minute.

Although the Hens didn’t score again, they pulled out the victory as four straight goals by Rutgers, including two by Rommel, was not enough to catch Delaware. Chris Doctor’s goal with 5:10 remaining cut the lead to 10-6 but the Scarlet Knight never got closer.
