NEWARK, DE -- Cam Howard scored three goals and dished out two assists, Dan Hechtkopf (at right) added a goal and four assists, and Alex Smith won 20 of 21 faceoffs as the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse squad overpowered Robert Morris 19-3 Saturday night at Rullo Stadium to earn the No. 3 seed in this week’s Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.
Delaware (11-4, 3-3 CAA) improved to 8-0 at Rullo this season to complete the first undefeated home record since 1962 and won for the 14th time in the last 16 outings at home. The Hens posted a season-high total for goals, matched a season-high for shots with 56, and recorded its most one-sided victory since a 25-5 win over Hartford back in 1999. Thirteen different Delaware players scored a goal, including five with two or more tallies.
The Blue Hens, who won the CAA regular season title a year ago and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, will begin post-season action May 3 in the CAA semifinals at No. 2 seed Towson. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium. The winner will advance to the CAA championship game Saturday against the winner of Wednesday’s game between No. 1 Hofstra and No. 4 Villanova. The league champion earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Howard, last week’s CAA Player of the Week, continued his fine play as he notched his second straight hat trick and third of the season and extended his point-scoring streak to 21 straight games. Hechtkopf added a goal and a career-high four assists while Jordan Hall had two goals and an assist, Kyle Rotelli scored twice to go with an assist, Dan Deckelbaum added two goals to up his team lead to 27, and Joe Gargiulo scored twice in just his second career game. Smith won 20 of 21 faceoffs to regain his national lead in that category at 71.1 percent while also scooping up 12 groundballs.
The victory marked the 250th career triumph for Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw, who became just the fourth active NCAA Division I men’s coach to reach the milestone. The two-time national coach of the year is 250-225 in his 31st season overall, including a mark of 226-208 in 28 seasons at Delaware.
Robert Morris (1-13, 0-6 CAA), a first-year member of the CAA, finished off the season with a 13-game losing streak. Andrew Watt, Frank Keel, and Carlo Sunseri scored the Colonial goals. Robert Morris didn’t get its first shot on goal until Delaware held a 4-0 lead and managed just 26 shots for the game.
Delaware scored three goals in the first four minutes of the game and led 6-0 after Sean Calabrese scored with 2:57 left in the opening period. Robert Morris finally scored on a goal by Watt with 1:37 left in the period. The Hens followed by scoring six more goals by six different players in the second period to take a 12-1 lead into intermission.
After Robert Morris got a goal from Keel with 7:08 left in the third stanza to cut the lead to 13-2, the Hens reeled off five straight goals over the next 12 minutes, including two by Gargiulo in a span of 1:22, to go up 18-2 with 7:30 left to play.
