Blue Hen Men's Lacrosse Drops First Game of Season with 14-9 Loss to Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, NY -- The University of Delaware men's lacrosse squad suffered its first loss of the season as Stony Brook got five goals and an assist from Bo Tripodi and posted a 14-9 non-league win over the Blue Hens Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.

Delaware, which had opened the season with one-sided wins over Saint Joseph's and Lehigh, outshot the Seawolves 41-40 but were hurt by 12 penalties on the day. Senior midfielder Joe Trentzsch (right) recorded his third career hat trick with three goals to pace the Hens.

Cam Howard added a goal and dished out two assists, Bobby West added a goal and assist, and John Carrozza dished out two assists to pace Delaware. Chris Collins also recorded 15 saves and Alex Smith won 16 of 25 faceoffs.

Tripodi was one of six Stony Brook players to score a goal as he tallied five times, including three in the first half, to lead the way. Sean Chamberlain scored three goals while Jason Cappadoro scored twice and dished out three assists, Larry Cerasi had two goals and an assist, and Adam Marksberry chipped in with a goal and three assists. Stony Brook downed the Hens for the first time since 2002 after two straight losses.

Delaware, which was looking to start 3-0 for the second straight season, got on the board first when West scored his first career goal with the Blue Hens down one man with 9:07 left in the opening quarter. But Stony Brook answered just 21 seconds later with a goal by Chamberlain and scored the next four goals in order to take the lead for good at 5-1 midway through the second half.

Delaware's Dave Powers scored his team-high sixth goal of the season with 9:29 left in the half to cut the lead to 5-2, but the Seawolves scored the next two goals before Trentzsch's first score of the day with 2:14 left in the half cut the lead to 7-3 at intermission.

But Stony Brook put the game away early in the third period as Chamberlain scored two goals and Cappadoro and Tripodi each added one in the first four minutes of the half to stretch the lead to 11-3. The Hens never got closer than the final margin despite scoring the final three goals of the game.

Delaware will continue action next Saturday, March 5 when the Blue Hens host Rutgers at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
