Uses Big Third Quarter to Down Sacred
Heart 15-11 in CAA Men's

Mills, MD - right) each scored two goals
to key a pivotal 7-0 Blue Hen run in the
third quarter that lifted the University
of Delaware to a 15-11 Colonial Athletic
Association men's lacrosse victory over
Sacred Heart Saturday evening at Rullo
Stadium.
Delaware,
which won its third straight game and its
fifth in the last six games, improved to
7-3 and remained in first place in the CAA
standings with a 2-0 mark. Sacred Heart
lost its third straight game to fall to
4-4 (0-1 CAA).
The Blue
Hens broke away from a 6-4 halftime lead
by scoring the first seven goals of the
third quarter to go up 13-4, then held off
a late Pioneer surge to pick up the
victory over SHU for the second straight
year.
Powers,
Delaware's leading scorer with 23 goals
this year, led all Blue Hen scorers with
four goals and an assist while Jordan Hall
added three goals and an assist, Joe
Trentzsch scored two goals and added two
assists, Deckelbaum chipped in with two
goals and two assists, and Cam Howard
added a goal and two assists. Alex Smith
won 22 of 29 faceoffs and Chris Collins,
last week's CAA Player of the Week, added
11 saves in the nets.
Sacred
Heart got five goals and an assist from
Kiel Adams while Peter Greco scored a goal
and dished out three assists and Matthew
Robideau contributed a goal and an assist.
Goalkeeper Thomas Hind made 14
stops.
Delaware
outshot the Pioneers by a wide 48-24
margin, won 22 of 29 faceoffs, and held a
44-30 edge in groundballs on the way to
the victory.
After
Delaware opened the scoring on a goal by
Howard just 2:15 into the game, Sacred
Heart's Adams followed with three goals to
lead the Pioneers to a 3-2 first quarter
lead. The Hens scored four straight to
open the second period, with Power scored
one and assisting on another, to go up 6-3
with 6:54 left in the half. Adams scored
once again with 4:29 left in the first
half to cut the UD lead to 6-4 at the
break.
The third
quarter was all Delaware as the Hens
scored the first seven goals, completing
an 11-1 run, to go up 13-4 with 5:16 left.
Deckelbaum scored two goals within 26
seconds of each other and Powers scored
consecutive goals in a span of 39 seconds
to key the run.
But Sacred
Heart made a spirited comeback, scoring
the final two goals of the third quarter
to cut the lead to 13-6, then outscoring
the Hens 4-1 in the first 10 minutes of
the final stanza to narrow the margin to
14-10 with 5:23 left. Six different SHU
players scored during the run, including
Adams, who finished the run with his fifth
goal of the game.
Delaware
held on the rest of the way, getting a
goal from freshman Drew Turner with 3:47
left to push the lead back to five goals.
