Scores Four Points as Delaware Moves to
2-0 with 12-2 Win over

NEWARK, DE
-- Jordan Hall (right) scored twice and
dished out two assists and Dave Powers and
Dan Deckelbaum each scored two goals and
dished out an assist as another balanced
effort led the University of Delaware
men's lacrosse team to a 12-2 non-league
victory over Lehigh Saturday at Rullo
Stadium.
The Hens,
who are off to a 2-0 start for the second
straight year and for the third time since
1999, got another balanced effort as nine
different players scored a goal. Lehigh
(0-1) fell in its season opener.
Joe
Trentzsch added a goal and an assist and
the Hens also got single goals from Andy
Hipple, Vincent Giordano, Alex Smith, John
Carrozza, and Marty Kupprion on the way to
the victory. Delaware outshot the Mountain
Hawks 46-24 with Blue Hen goalkeeper Chris
Collins notching 13 saves. Smith won 16 of
18 faceoffs for the Blue Hens.
Lehigh,
coming off a 4-10 season in 2004, got
goals from David Gaunt and Andrew
Mastromonaco. Goalkeeper Eric Spirko
recorded 12 saves.
Delaware,
which downed Lehigh 5-3 last season in
Bethlehem, PA, defeated Lehigh for the
21st straight time since 1972. The Hens,
who defeated Saint Joseph's 18-3 in last
week's opener, have now won consecutive
games by 10 or more goals for the first
time since 1999 when the Hens opened with
wins of 19-8 over Gannon and 25-5 over
Hartford on the way to an NCAA Tournament
berth.
Hipple
scored the game's first goal just three
minutes in to give Delaware a 1-0 lead but
neither team scored again until the final
minute of the first stanza when Powers and
Smith scored within nine seconds of each
other for a 3-0 lead. A goal by Powers
with 6:51 left in the first half gave
Delaware a 4-0 advantage.
Lehigh
finally ended a near 25-minute scoring
drought when the Mountain Hawks got on the
board on a goal by Mastromonaco with 5:07
left in the opening half. But Delaware
countered with two straight goals to take
a 6-1 lead into intermission and opened
the second half by scoring the first six
goals to put the game away.
Delaware
will continue action next Saturday, Feb.
26, when it travels to Stony Brook for a 1
p.m. non-league game in New
York.
