(Fallston/Fallston, MD - at right) and
Dave Powers (West Genesee/Camillus, NY)
each scored a career-high five goals and
sophomore Cam Howard (Tatnall/Wilmington,
DE) scored a goal and dished out five
assists for the second straight game as
the University of Delaware men's lacrosse
team used a big third quarter to post an
18-9 non-league win over Albany Saturday
at Rullo Stadium.
The
game was originally scheduled to be played
in New York but was moved to Delaware on
Thursday due a snow storm in the Albany
area.
Delaware,
which won its second straight game to
improve to 4-2, outscored Albany 6-1 in
the third quarter to break away from an
8-4 halftime lead. Albany, which has won
the America East conference title and
advanced to the NCAA Tournament each of
the last two seasons, fell to 1-1 on the
year. Luke Daquino scored twice and dished
out three assists while Brendan Russell
scored twice and Merrick Thomson scored a
goal and dished out two
assists.
Trentzsch
and Powers led the way for the Hens with
their five goals while Jordan Hall had two
goals and two assists, Dan Deckelbaum
scored twice and dished out an assist, and
Bobby West scored a goal and dished out
two assists. Delaware outshot the Great
Danes 59-37 and held a 50-31 advantage in
groundballs. The Hens also won 23 of 28
faceoffs with Alex Smith winning 22 of 25
attempts.
Trentzsch,
who has now scored a goal in nine straight
games since last season, upped his team
leading goal total to 14 and surpassed his
previous high of three vs. Stony Brook
earlier this season. Powers, who entered
the season with just three career goals,
also has 14 goals this season and
surpassed his previous high of three goals
vs. Saint Joseph's in the season opener.
Delaware
jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first
quarter and upped the lead to 7-3 when
Trentzsch and Deckelbaum added goals with
4:54 left in the opening half. Frank
Resetarits scored for Albany to cut the
lead to 7-4 but the Hens took the 8-4
halftime lead when Howard scored with 1:18
left in the half.
The
third quarter was all Delaware as the Hens
scored the first five goals of the stanza,
including three straight from Powers in a
span of five minutes, to increase the
margin to 13-4. Albany never got closer
than eight goals the rest of the way.
Delaware increased its lead to as much as
11 goals at 18-7 when Dan Hechtkopf scored
with 2:44 left.
