#12 Towson 11, #17 Delaware 9 April 14, 2004 Blue Hens' Late Rally Falls Short in CAA Loss to Rival Tigers Boxscore TOWSON, MD -- Freshman Jonathan Engelke scored three goals and started a pivotal 3-0 Towson run late in the third quarter as the No. 12 ranked Tigers downed No. 17 University of Delaware 11-9 in a Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse game Wednesday night at Johnny Unitas Center. The Blue Hens (8-4, 1-2 CAA), coming off a 12-4 loss to Villanova Saturday, battled back all night and pulled to within one goal at 10-9 with 1:34 left to play, but Towson's Ben DeFelice won the ensuing faceoff and finished the possession with a goal with 20 seconds left to ice the win for the Tigers (6-3, 3-0 CAA). Towson, which also got two goals and two assists from Bobby Griebe and two goals from Danny Pfarr, won its fifth straight game and downed the Hens for the third straight meeting. Engelke, who scored eight goals in a game earlier this season, extended his CAA-leading total to 25 on the season. The Blue Hens, who lost their second straight, had eight different players score a point as Matt Alrich and Jordan Hall each scored twice and dished out an assist, Andy Hipple scored two goals, and Cam Howard added one goal and three assists. Delaware goalkeeper Chris Collins posted 10 saves on the night. Ryan Metzbower scored a goal for the Hens, upping his career point total to 99, just one shy of becoming the 25th player in UD history to reach 100 points. The Tigers jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter lead as Pfarr tallied with just five seconds left in the stanza. But Delaware responded with goals from Alrich and Metzbower to gain its only tie of the night at 3-3 with six minutes left before halftime. Towson came back to take a 6-4 halftime lead as Griebe scored his first goal of the game with 4:56 left before halftime and Engelke scored twice within a span of 49 seconds. The Hens pulled to within one goal twice in the third quarter as Hipple's goal just two minutes and 32 seconds into the half cut the lead to 7-6 and a goal by Howard with 9:20 left in the third stanza cut the margin to 7-6. Towson then followed with its pivotal run as Engelke scored with 5:09 left and Griebe scored with just two seconds left in the period. A goal by Myers upped the Towson lead to 10-6 early in the final quarter, but Delaware rallied back as Hall scored with 7:48 left and Hipple scored just 1:41 later. When Alrich scored his second goal of the game off a loose ball with 1:34 remaining, the Hens had cut the margin back to one at 10-9. But Towson iced the game as DeFelice, the CAA's leading faceoff specialist, won the ensuing faceoff and he scored 74 seconds later on a man-up situation to clinch the win. Delaware will resume play Saturday when the Blue Hens host CAA foe Drexel at 7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
