St. Mary's 3 March 10, 2004 Blue Hens Jump Out to 10-1 Halftime Lead on the Way to Win Boxscore NEWARK, DE -- A total of 11 different University of Delaware players scored at least one goal and Dave Powers (at right), Cam Howard, and Ryan Overs each netted two as the Blue Hens romped to a 14-3 non-league men's lacrosse win over Mt. St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon at Rullo Stadium. Delaware jumped out to a 6-1 lead after one quarter and held a commanding 10-1 edge at the half to improve to 4-1 on the season and defeat the Mountaineers for the seventh time without a loss. Mt. St. Mary's, playing for the first time since a season opening 11-8 loss to Bucknell Feb. 28, fell to 0-2 on the season. Howard and Overs each added an assist for the Blue Hens while Ryan Metzbower, Joe Trentzsch, Jordan Hall, and Matt Alrich each had one goal and one assist. Alrich, who upped his team-leading goal total to 11 for the season, scored for the 20th straight game since the start of the 2003 season. Delaware freshman Alex Smith also scored a goal and won 16 of his 21 faceoffs. Matt Warner, Billy Jautze, and Jason Werner each scored goals to lead the Mountaineers. Delaware outshot Mt. St. Mary's 46-31 and held a 38-23 edge in groundballs and 16-5 edge in faceoffs. Delaware goalkeepers Chris Collins (12 saves) and Tommy Scherr (three saves) combined for 15 saves on the afternoon. Alrich and Howard scored 33 seconds apart early in the game for a 2-0 Delaware lead before the Mount got on the board on a man-up goal by Werner with 7:10 left in the opening stanza to cut the the lead to 2-1. But it was all Delaware after that as the Hens reeled off four straight goals to end the quarter, including two by Overs, to take a 6-1 lead. The Hens extended the goal-scoring run with four goals in the second quarter to head into halftime up 10-1. Delaware extended the lead to 12-1 with goals from Hall and Metzbower early in the second half before Mt. St. Mary's finally stopped the 10-goal run when Warner scored with 5:58 left in the third quarter. The Mountaineers went 31 minutes and 42 seconds between goals.
