Delaware 9, Mt. St. Mary's 6 March 5, 2003 Freshman Xander Ritz Leads the Way for Blue Hens   Chris Collins posted 15 saves for the Blue Hens BALTIMORE, MD -- Freshman Xander Ritz (Radnor/Wayne, PA) scored three goals and dished out two assists as the University of Delaware broke open the game with six goals in the second quarter on the way to a 9-6 non-league men's lacrosse win over Mt. St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon at Loyola College's Curley Field. The Blue Hens (2-2) also got three goals from junior Matt Alrich (Calvert Hall/Timonium, MD) and 15 saves in goal from Chris Collins (Lakeland-Panas/Yorktown, NY) on the way to snapping a two-game losing streak. The Hens will return to action Sunday when they host 2002 NCAA Tournament participant Manhattan at 1 p.m. Mt. St. Mary's fell to 0-3 on the season despite outshooting the Blue Hens 37-36. Matt Warner scored two goals and added two assists, Josh Warfield scored twice, and Kevin Merlini contributed a goal and an assist in the losing effort. Delaware has now defeated the Mountaineers in all six meetings between the two schools. Ritz, who entered the game as the Hens' second leading scorer with two goals and five assists, opened the scoring with 4:40 left in the opening period before Mt. St. Mary's came back to tie on a goal by Warner just two minutes later. Delaware broke away in the second quarter, scoring four straight goals capped by a Ritz tally with 6:01 left for a 5-1 lead. The Mountaineers stopped the streak when Warner scored with 4:36 left before halftime, but Ritz struck again, feeding Alrich for a score with 3:35 left and then closing the first half with a goal with just 17 seconds remaining for a 7-2 lead at intermission. The Mountaineers crept back in the game, scoring a single goal in the third and two more early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 7-5 with 7:45 remaining in the game. But the Hens countered on a goal by Kurt Nordhoff (Mt. Hebron/Ellicott City, MD) with 5:29 left and another by Alrich at the 2:46 mark fto open some breathing room. AGATE: Univ. of Delaware vs Mt.
