Three-Game Win Streak Come to an
End

NEWARK, DE -- Michael Solazzo
scored four goals, including three in a pivotal 6-1 run in
the third quarter that propelled University at Albany to a
16-12 non-league men's lacrosse victory over the University
of Delaware Saturday at Rullo Stadium.
The Blue Hens, who had their longest win
streak in three seasons snapped at three, got three goals
each from freshmen Kurt Nordhoff (Mt. Hebron/Ellicott
City, MD) and Xander Ritz (Radnor/Wayne, PA) but fell
to 4-3 on the season. Albany, coached by former Blue Hen
assistant Scott Marr, snapped a two-game losing streak to
improve to 2-2.
Nordhoff, who also dished out two
assists, scored all three of his goals in the final six
minutes of the game as the Blue Hens' rally fell short.
Ritz, who also dished out an assist, scored all three of his
goals in the second half. Scott Evans
(Kenner/Peterborough, Ontario) added two goals and an assist
while Delaware's leading scorer, Matt Alrich
(Calvert Hall/Timonium, MD), scored a goal and added an
assist. Alrich has now scored at least one goal in all seven
UD games this season and leads the team with 16.
Albany, which outshot Delaware 45-38 and
held a 16-14 advantage on faceoffs, also got two goals and
four assists from Luke Daquino and two goals each from Tim
Primrose, Jon Smith, and Brendan Russell.
The Great Danes came out firing, scoring
the first four goals of the game in the opening eight
minutes before the Hens got on the board when Andy Hipple
scored off an Alrich feed with 6:18 to go in the opening
stanza.
Daquino added his second goal of the game
and assisted on another as part of a three-goal run in the
second quarter to spot the Great Danes to an 8-3 lead at
intermission.
After Delaware cut the Albany lead to 8-5
on goals by Bob Meunier and Luke Wiles to open
the second half, the Great Danes responded with a 6-1 run to
take control. Solazzo scored three straight for Albany in a
run that didn't end until Delaware's Ritz scored with 1:24
left in the third quarter to cut the lead to
14-7.
Delaware made one last run in the final
quarter as Ritz and Nordhoff each scored two goals in a 4-0
run that cut the Albany lead to 15-11 with 4:20 left to
play. But Albany's Bobby Gabriel scored one minute later to
put the game away.
