CHAPEL HILL, NC --Host North
Carolina jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game and the
University of Delaware could never recover as the Blue Hens
dropped a 16-9 decision in a non-league men's lacrosse game
Saturday afternoon at Fetzer Field.
North Carolina (4-0) remained unbeaten on
the season as brothers Steven and Bryant Will did most of
the damage. Steven Will scored four goals and dished out an
assist and Bryant dished out four assists to lead the Tar
Heels. Delaware (2-2) got two goals each from sophomores
Ryan Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) and
Andrew Benazzi (Chaminade/Glen Cove, NY) in the loss.
UNC downed the Hens for the third straight
season.
The loss began a rugged three-game road
swing for the Hens that will continue with games at national
powers University of Maryland next Saturday and at Colonial
Athletic Association foe Towson March 23.
North Carolina, which had won two
overtime games to start the season 3-0, put this one away
early as UNC went up 6-0 in the first 10 minutes of the
contest and led by an 8-1 score at halftime. Delaware cut
the lead to four goals midway through the third quarter at
8-4, but could never get closer.
Tim Gosier scored three goals for North
Carolina, including two in the opening 6-0 run, and Austin
Garrison, Jed Prossner, and Mike McCall each added two
goals. North Carolina outshot the Hens 49-36 with goalkeeper
Paul Spellman stopping 10 shots to earn the win.
Metzbower, who upped his team-leading
point total to 14 points on 12 goals and two assists, led
the Hens with a goal and an assist. Ryan Overs, R.C.
Reed, Chris Bickley, Greg Grevey, and Andy Hipple
also scored for the Hens. Goalkeeper Dave Mullen
stopped 14 shots.
Delaware didn't score its first goal
until early in the second quarter when Overs took a feed
from Metzbower to cut the lead to 6-1 with 11:58 left before
halftime. But the Hens would not score again until the 12:48
mark of the third quarter when Reed converted.
Delaware cut the lead to 8-4 on a goal by
Metzbower with 7:08 left in the third, but UNC came right
back as Steven Will scored once and assisted on another in a
3-0 run to put the game away. Delaware managed five fourth
quarter goals, but North Carolina scored seven times in the
quarter, two by Steven Will, to keep the Hens
away.
