FAIRFIELD, CT -- Junior attackman
Stephen Grabow exploded for a season-high seven goals and
James Delmonico tallied three times as host Sacred Heart
jumped out to a 7-1 halftime lead and cruised to a 17-9
Colonial Athletic Association mens' lacrosse victory over
the University of Delaware Saturday afternoon at Campus
Field.
The Blue Hens, who got two goals each
from Scott Evans (St. Peter's/Peterborough, Ontario), Ryan
Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD), and Chris Bickley
(Abington/Jenkintown, PA), dropped their sixth straight game
to fall to 2-7 (0-3 CAA). Sacred Heart snapped a three-game
losing streak to improve to 3-5, 1-2, winning their first
ever CAA game. The game was the first matchup ever between
the two teams in men's lacrosse.
Delaware, which has been held to just one
goal three times during the losing streak, suffered from
another slow start again Saturday as Sacred Heart outscored
the Hens 5-0 in the first quarter and moved on to a 7-1 lead
at the break.
The Blue Hens fought back in the second
half and used five third quarter goals to pull to within
three midway through the stanza, but could never get
closer.
Sacred Heart, which became the sixth
straight opponent to score at least 15 goals and hold the
Hens under 10, made the most of its 37 shots on goal as
Grabow led the way. Grabow entered the game as the CAA's
fourth leading goal scorer with 16 and his seven goals was a
season high among CAA players this spring. Josh Mathon added
two goals and T.J. Hutmacher recorded two goals and two
assists. Goalkeeper Bryan Campo held the Hens at bay by
posting 14 saves against 31 shots.
Evans added two assists for the Blue Hens
while Brad Downer (Annapolis/Annapolis, MD) added a goal and
two assists and Matt Lehmann (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD)
chipped in with one goal and one assist. Three different UD
goalkeepers combined for 18 saves.
Delaware returns to action next Saturday,
Apr. 13, when the its hosts longtime rival Hofstra
University in the annual Milt Roberts Day/Delaware Lacrosse
Foundation Day game at Rullo Stadium at 7 p.m. Some proceeds
from the game will go to the Delaware Lacrosse
Foundation.
