PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Junior
midfielder Brad Downer (Annapolis, MD HS) scored all
three of his goals in the second half, including the
go-ahead goal with three minutes left to play, and
freshman Andy Hipple (Moorestown, NJ HS) added three
more tallies in a return to his home state as the University
of Delaware men's lacrosse evened its record with a 12-10
non-league victory over host Rutgers University Saturday
afternoon.
The Blue Hens (1-1), coming off a
season-opening 17-12 loss to Loyola last week, overcame a
one-goal deficit in the final nine minutes of action to
claim the victory, its fourth in the last five meetings with
the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers fell to 1-2 despite outshooting
the Blue Hens 42-22.
Downer also added an assist while Hipple
continued his scoring onslaught, upping his scoring total to
six goals and four assists in his first two career games.
All-American candidate Ryan Metzbower (St.
Mary's/Severna Park, MD) added two goals and an assist for
Delaware while senior goalkeeper Dave Mullen
(Ridley/Ridley Park, PA) was superb in goal, stopping 18
shots.
Tim Horgan, Mike Buck, and Bryan Warner
each scored two goals for Rutgers with Jamie Lovejoy adding
a game-high four assists. Goalkeeper Christopher Kenyon
allowed 12 goals while stopping five shots.
The game was close the entire way and
featured six ties with neither team ever leading by more
than three goals.
Delaware scored three straight goals
early in the second quarter, including two by Hipple, to
take its largest lead at 5-2 with 9:35 left in the first
half. Rutgers rallied with five unanswered goals, including
the first three to open the second half, to take its biggest
lead at 7-5 with 4:51 remaining in the third quarter.
The lead changed twice more with Rutgers
using goals by Warner and Buck to take a 10-9 advantage with
9:22 left. But Delaware shut down the Scarlet Knights the
rest of the way as R.C. Reed scored his only goal of
the game with 7:52 to tie it at 10-10 and Downer connected
for the go-ahead goal at the three-minute mark. Metzbower
added some insurance with an unassisted goal with 77 seconds
left.
Delaware will continue action this
Tuesday, March 5 when it hosts Mt. St. Mary's at 7:30 p.m.
at Rullo Stadium.
