UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- Host Penn
State broke open a close game by outscoring the University
of Delaware 6-1 in the final quarter on the way to a 16-8
non-league men's lacrosse game Wednesday night at Jeffrey
Field.
The Blue Hens dropped their fifth
straight contest, all to Top 20 teams, to fall to 2-6 on the
season. Penn State snapped a four-game losing streak to
improve to 4-4 on the season. The Nittany Lions had lost
those four games by a combined five goals.
Delaware will look to snap the losing
skid this Saturday as the Hens travel to Connecticut to take
on Colonial Athletic Association foe Sacred Heart for a 1
p.m. start. Both teams are 0-2 in CAA play and will be
looking for their first ever CAA victory.
Blue Hen sophomore Ryan Metzbower
(St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD), held to just one goal over
the last three games, scored two goals and freshman Bryan
Tingle (Central Bucks East/Jamison, PA) also scored
twice to lead the Blue Hens. Matt Lehmann, Chris Bickley,
Scott Evans, and Bob Meunier also added goals
with Evans chipping in with an assist.
Will Driscoll led Penn State with six
goals while Will Cutler added three goals and Luke Oglesby
handed out five assists. In all, nine Nittany Lion players
scored a goal on the evening.
Penn State took a 6-4 lead at halftime as
Driscoll scored three of his goals. Delaware fought back and
cut the Nittany Lion lead to 9-7 on a goal by Metzbower with
5:26 left in the third quarter.
But Penn State took off from there with a
five-goal run, including two by Driscoll, to take control at
14-7 midway through the final stanza. Delaware finally ended
the drought on a goal by Tingle with 3:03 left but it wasn't
enough.
