NEWARK, DE -- Junior R.C.
Reed (Boy's Latin/Timonium, MD) equalled a career-high
with four goals and dished out two assists to lead the
University of Delaware men's lacrosse team to a 15-6
non-league victory over Mt. St. Mary's Tuesday night at
Rullo Stadium.
The Blue Hens (2-1) won their second
straight game while Mt. St. Mary's (0-5) remained winless on
the season as its offense continued to struggle, being held
to six goals or less for the fifth straight game. The Blue
Hens have now defeated the Mountaineers each of the five
all-time meetings.
Reed matched his previous high of four
goals scored against Hartford his freshman season in 2000
and posted a career-high six points as the Hens posted the
easy win, outshooting Mt. St. Mary's 41-15. Delaware head
coach Bob Shillinglaw celebrated his 50th birthday
with his 188th win in his 24th year at Delaware.
A total of 10 different Delaware players
scored at least one goal as sophomore Ryan Metzbower
(St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) netted three goals for his
third straight hat trick. Chris Bickley
(Abington/Jenkintown, PA) added a goal and an
assist.
Mt. St. Mary's got two goals from Josh
Warfield, both in the third quarter. Mt. St. Mary's opened
the scoring on a goal by Sean Mahon just 86 seconds into the
contest, but the Hens struck back quickly as Reed scored his
first goal of the game only one minute and 18 seconds later.
Junior Brad Downer scored for the Hens with 7:31 left to
give the Hens the lead for good at 2-1.
The Blue Hens opened the lead to 5-2
early in the second quarter before Mt. St. Mary's countered
with goals by Andrew Petcoff and Mark Cox to cut the margin
to 5-3 with 3:52 left before the half. But the Hens
countered again as Reed scored with 2:07 left in the half
and Metzbower converted at the 1:16 mark and Delaware was
never threatened again. Metzbower scored two more goals in
the third quarter as the Hens used a 4-2 advantage in the
quarter to take a comfortable 11-5 lead into the final
stanza.
Delaware begins a tough three-game road
stretch this Saturday as the Hens travel to the University
of North Carolina and follow with successive road tests at
the University of Maryland and Colonial Athletic Association
foe Towson.
