Kessler Hits the Net Six Times as Pride Cruise Past Blue Hens

Matt Lehmann had one goal and one assist for Delaware

NEWARK, DE -- Senior Tom Kessler tied a career-high with six goals, including three in the first quarter, as No. 10 ranked Hofstra University cruised past the University of Delaware for a 17-5 Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse victory Saturday night at Rullo Stadium.

Kessler, Hofstra' all-time leading goal scorer with 136, also added an assist and Scott Dooley and Jim Femminella each contributed three goals and an assist as the Pride won their sixth straight game to improve to 8-3, 4-1 CAA. The Pride downed the Hens for the fourth straight time.

Kessler was named the game Most Valuable Player as part of Delaware Youth Lacrosse Day and Milt Roberts Day. The late Roberts, a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, co-founded the UD program in 1948.

Delaware, which got goals from five different players with Matt Lehmann (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) also adding an assist, suffered their seventh straight loss, six to Top 20 ranked teams, to fall to 2-8, 0-4. Brad Downer (Annapolis/Annapolis, MD), Ryan Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) , Scott Evans (St. Peter's/Peterborough, Ontario), and Chris Bickley (Abington/Jenkintown, PA) also scored for Delaware. Goalkeeper Dave Mullen (Ridley/Ridley Park, PA) notched 22 saves in goal.

For Hofstra, Adam Hananel added three assists, Ryan Harris contributed two assists, and Paul Rao and Steve McTigue each had one goal and one assist. Starting goalkeeper Jack Alaimo, one of four used by the Pride on the night, posted 10 saves.

Hofstra held a commanding 54-31 edge in shots on goal and won 22 of the 26 faceoffs with Rao winning eight of nine attempts. The Pride also converted on five of eight extra man opportunities.

Delaware jumped on board first when Bickley converted with 8:36 left in the opening stanza, but Hofstra responded quickly and often. Kessler scored four goals and Dooley contributed three goals in a nine-goal flurry that resulted in a 9-1 lead with 7:31 left in the first half. The Pride eventually moved on for a 11-2 halftime lead and were never threatened.

The Blue Hens will travel to New York to take on Stony Brook next Saturday at 1 p.m. before returning home for three straight home games at Rullo Stadium to end the season.
