Drexel 14, Delaware 10 April 30, 2002 Drexel Ends 23 Years of Futility vs. Blue Hens With Lacrosse Victory   Ryan Overs dished out two assists for Delaware NEWARK, DE -- Drexel University ended 23 years of futility against the University of Delaware Tuesday night as Sean Moloney scored three goals to lead the Dragons to a 14-10 Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse victory at Rullo Stadium. Moloney added an assist and Jason Kilpatrick, Joe Fiore, and Dan Kennedy each tallied twice as Drexel (9-5, 3-2 CAA) took control by scoring six straight goals in the second quarter and held on to defeat Delaware (3-10, 0-5 CAA) for the first time since 1978 after 23 straight losses. Delaware, which was coming off a 9-8 overtime win over Denver Saturday that snapped an eight-game losing streak, remained winless in its first season as CAA members and established a school record with its fifth straight conference setback. Sophomore Scott Evans (St. Peter's/Peterborough, Ontario) kept up his impressive play with a team-high three goals, giving him 13 over the last five games. The Blue Hens played without top scorer Ryan Metzbower who was recovering from a concussion suffered in the Denver game. Andy Hipple (Moorestown/Moorestown, NJ) added two goals for the Hens while Ryan Overs (Lynbrook/Lynbrook, NY) and Bob Meunier (Bishop O'Connell/Arlington, VA) each dished out two assists. Drexel, which won its second straight and fifth in the last six games, outshot the Blue Hens by a 53-31 margin and won 21 of the 28 faceoffs. Drexel goalkeeper Jordie Olivella posted eight saves. The win was the Dragons' first over Delaware since a 15-11 win in 1978. During the 23-game streak, Delaware had won all but two games by at least five goals. Delaware took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter as Evans scored twice in the opening stanza before Drexel tied the game at 3-3 two minutes into the second quarter. The Blue Hens responded with three straight goals by Evans, Hipple, and Greg Grevey to go up 6-3 with 8:56 left before halftime. But Drexel took off from there, scoring the next six goals of the game, including two by Kilpatrick, to take the lead for good at 9-6 with 12 seconds left before halftime. The Blue Hens managed to stay close and pulled to within one goal at 10-9 on a score by Dan Hechtkopf with 2:47 left in the third quarter, but Drexel responded 12 seconds later behind a goal from Brian Madeira to go back up 11-9. The Dragons put the game away by scoring the first three goals of the final stanza, holding Delaware scoreless for nearly 12 minutes. Delaware will close out the 2002 season Friday night vs. Villanova in a CAA game at 7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
