Hens End Long
Losing Streak Behind Bickley's
Game-Winner
|

Chris
Bickley scored the game-winner with just 56 seconds
left in the first sudden death
overtime
|
NEWARK, DE -- Senior Chris
Bickley (Abington/Jenkintown, PA) came around the left
side of the goal and scored from point-blank range with 56
seconds left in the first sudden death overtime period as
the University of Delaware put an end to an eight-game
losing streak with a 9-8 non-league men's lacrosse win over
the University of Denver Saturday night at Rullo
Stadium.
Bickley, whose only goal of the contest
was the game-winner, lifted Delaware to its first victory
since a 15-6 win over Mt. St. Mary's back on March 5 and
improved the Blue Hens to 3-9 overall. Delaware had faced
six top 20 teams during the losing streak. Unranked Denver,
coming off an overtime win over Butler last Sunday, fell to
6-7 on the season. The game was the first meeting ever
between the two schools in men's lacrosse.
Sophomore Scott Evans (St.
Peter's/Peterborough, Ontario) led the Blue Hens with a
team-high three goals by while junior Brad Downer
(Annapolis/Annapolis, MD) added two goals and freshman
Andy Hipple (Moorestown/Moorestown, NJ) had a goal
and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Dave Mullen
(Ridley/Ridley Park, PA) posted 16 saves to earn the
win. Evans has now scored 10 goals over the last four games.
Bickley scored a goal for the fifth straight game.
The Pioneers got a game-high four goals
from freshman Darren Sasaki-Scanlon (Brien McMahon/Norwalk,
CT) and three goals from senior Chad Wittman (Vermont
Academy/Colorado Springs, CO). Goalkeeper Jeff Nunziato
(Shaker/Latham, NY) had 14 saves in goal. Sasaki-Scanlon
entered the game having scored just three goals all season.
The Pioneers top three scorers, Matt Brown (31 goals), Jeff
Biggs (22), and Erik Swanson (13) were held scoreless and
each contributed just one assist on the night.
Denver jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the
first two minutes of play and held a 4-2 advantage early in
the second quarter before the Hens got goals from freshman
Bob Meunier (Bishop O'Connell/Arlington, VA) and
Evans to tie the score for the first time at 4-4. Junior
defenseman Mackey Cronin (Boy's Latin/Baltimore, MD)
scored with 4:21 left in the second quarter to send the game
knotted at 5-5 heading into intermission.
The Pioneers regained the lead in the
third quarter as Wittman and Andrew Huelskoetter scored for
a 7-5 lead with 9:06 left. But Delaware rallied again as
Downer scored with 6:35 left in the third quarter and Hipple
tied the score at 7-7 on a goal with 6:01 left in
regulation. The Hens took their first lead of the game two
minutes later on a goal by Evans with 3:57 remaining, but
Denver's Wittman tallied with 2:34 left to send the game
into sudden death overtime.
Neither team scored in the extra session
until Bickley took a pass behind the net, came around the
left side and drilled the game-winner past Nunziato.
Delaware will close out its season with
two home games next week vs. Colonial Athletic Association
foes Drexel April 30 and Villanova May 3.
