Blue Hens Put in Big Defensive Effort to Down Catamounts

Dave Mullen Posted 11 saves for the Hens

NEWARK, DE - The University of Delaware used a strong defensive effort to hold off the University of Vermont for a 5-4 America East men’s lacrosse victory Saturday at Rullo Stadium.

The Blue Hens held the Catamounts scoreless for nearly 40 minutes to build a 5-2 lead, then held on in the final minutes to post the win for the second time in the last three games.

Delaware (3-7, 1-1 America East), which defeated Vermont for the 10th time in 11 all-time meetings, snapped a five-game home losing streak and evened their conference record. Junior Chris Bickley (Abington/Jenkintown, PA) and senior Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) each had a goal and dished out an assist while junior goalkeeper Dave Mullen (Ridley/Ridley Park, PA) stopped 11 Catamount shots.

Vermont, which has already surpassed last season’s win total of five, had a three-game winning streak snapped to fall to 6-3, 0-1 America East. Phil McKnight (Boy’s Latin/Baltimore, MD) had a goal and an assist and Brendan Ginty (Germantown Academy/Fort Washington, PA) dished out two fourth-quarter assists to lead the effort. Goalkeeper Ed Burns (Nottingham/Syracuse, NY) posted 12 saves.

The teams played to a 2-2 first quarter deadlock as Dave Christopher and Mackey Cronin scored goals for the Hens. Delaware took a 4-2 lead into halftime as Bickley scored a goal and fed Lavey for another in the second quarter. Delaware scored the only goal of the third quarter as Brad Downer tallied with 8:00 left for a 5-2 lead.

Vermont finally snapped a 36-minute, 17-second scoring drought when Chris Legare scored an extra man goal with 8:50 left to play to cut the Delaware lead to 5-3. The Catamounts got one step closer four minutes later when McKnight scored with 4:51 left to cut the lead to 5-4.

Vermont had several chances to tie the game but Mullen stopped shots by Matt Dias with 1:34 left and by Doug Moses with 16 seconds left. Legare turned the ball over in front of the Delaware crease with five seconds left to play to end Vermont’s hopes.

Delaware returns to action April 11 at Drexel for an America East game.
