Lavey, Lehmann Lead Way as Hens Upset No. 20 Penn

Jason Lavey Scored All Five of his Goals in the Opening Quarter

VILLANOVA, PA -- Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) scored five goals and assisted on another in a seven-goal first quarter explosion as University of Delaware held off a late charge and defeated No. 20 University of Pennsylvania, 12-10, in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.

Lavey's early offense staked the Blue Hens to a 7-2 lead after one quarter and extended his personal streak to 38 consecutive games with at least one point.

Penn (6-6) fought back to tie the game, 7-7, with 5:55 left in the third quarter, however, on Mike Iannocone's goal.

Delaware (6-8) regained the lead Matt Lehmann's goal with 1:55 left in the third. Lehmann gave the Blue Hens a two-goal cushion when he scored just five seconds into the final quarter to make it a 9-7 game.

Penn got to within a goal three more times in the final quarter until Lehmann (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) put the game away with an unassisted tally, his career-high third goal of the game with 33 seconds left.

Delaware got 18 saves from Dave Mullen (Ridley/Ridley Park, PA). Penn's Ryan Kelly recorded nine in a losing effort.

Penn was led by Scott Solow with four goals and one assist.

Delaware travels to Long Island to open the America East Tournament Wednesday night. The third-seeded Blue Hens face the No. 2 seeded Pride of Hofstra at 7 p.m. at Hofstra Stadium. Hofstra won the regular season meeting, 11-10, in Hempstead.
