Lavey, Motta Lead Way as Hens Win First Game

Jason Lavey dished out five assists and scored twice

EMMITSBURG, MD -- Senior Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) recorded two goals and five assists as the University of Delaware built a six-goal halftime lead and cruised to a 13-7 non-league men's lacrosse victory over host Mt. St. Mary's at Mt. St. Mary's Lacrosse Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Hens, ranked No. 17 in the latest Inside Lacrosse Top 20 poll and coming off a season-opening 8-7 loss at Loyola Saturday, improved to 1-1 on the season. The Mountaineers dropped their season opener. The Hens have now won all four meetings between the two schools.

Lavey, a pre-season All-American and the ninth leading scorer in NCAA Division I a year ago, was one of nine Blue Hens to score at least one goal.

Senior Jason Motta (Lakeland-Panas/Peekskill, NY) led the Hens with three goals while Lavey notched two and freshman Matt Lehmann (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) scored twice. R.C. Reed (Boy's Latin/Timonium, MD) added a goal and an assist. Lavey moved into 15th place on the all-time UD points list during the game with 128.

Delaware, which outshot the Mount 49-32, jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter lead on two goals by Motta and then scored five in the second stanza, two by Lavey, to take an 8-2 lead into halftime. The Hens led by as much as eight goals at 13-5 before Mt. St. Mary's scored twice in the final two minutes of play.

Delaware goalkeeper Dave Mullen (Ridley/Ridley Park, PA) posted 15 saves while Tim Dryer stopped 18 shots for Mt. St. Mary's. The Blue Hens came up big killing penalties as the Mount converted on just 1 of 11 extra man situations.

The Mount got a pair of tallies from junior transfer Ian Cassidy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) on his debut. Senior Bryan Cole (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) won 11 of 18 face-offs and led the team with eight ground balls.

Delaware continues play this Saturday when they take on Rutgers at Princeton (NJ) University.
