Combs Scores Six Goals, Puts an End to Delaware Upset Bid

Matt Lehmann scored a first half goal

NEWARK, DE -- Buggs Combs, the nation's leading scorer entering the game, exploded for six goals, including four in the final quarter, as No. 3 ranked University of Maryland held off host University of Delaware for a 10-4 non-league men's lacrosse victory Saturday evening.

Maryland, the highest ranked opponent for the Blue Hens since falling to No. 2 Virginia in the 1999 NCAA quarterfinals, remained undefeated on the season with a record of 5-0. Delaware, which got one goal each from four different players, lost its fourth straight game to fall to 1-5 on the season. The Hens were trying to defeat their first top five ranked opponent since a 9-5 win over then No. 5 Maryland in 1985.

Delaware hung tough most of the night, trailing 4-2 at halftime and cutting the Maryland lead to 4-3 with 7:16 left in the third quarter on a goal by Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY). With the goal, Lavey scored at least one point for the 33rd straight game since 1999.

But the Terrapins, a 2000 NCAA quarterfinalist, came right back one minute later as Dan Lamonica scored to give Maryland a 5-3 lead heading into the final quarter. The fourth stanza was all Maryland as the Terrapins scored five straight goals in a span of three minutes and 34 seconds, four of them by Combs, to put the game away.

Delaware got a goal from Jason Motta (Lakeland-Panas/Peekskill, NY) with 5:09 left to play but it wasn't enough. Blue Hen freshman Luke Thompson (Salisbury/Arlington, MA) scored the Hens other goal.

The Hens held a share of the lead only once when freshman Matt Lehmann (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) scored with 11:16 left in the second quarter for a 1-1 tie.

Combs, who scored three goals in Maryland's 13-4 win over Delaware last season, upped his NCAA leading goal total to 23 with his six Saturday night. Dan Lamonica added two goals and three assists and Mike Mollot added a goal and two assists for the Terrapins.

Delaware will open America East play next Saturday when the Hens host No. 20 Towson at Rullo Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
