HEMPSTEAD, NY -- A torrid comeback by the University of Delaware fell just short Saturday afternoon as 18th ranked Hofstra University held on for an 11-10 America East men's lacrosse victory over the Blue Hens before 2,940 fans at Hofstra Stadium.

The Blue Hens, who trailed 8-2 early in the third quarter before storming back, had a two-game losing streak snapped to fall to 4-8, 2-2 America East. Hofstra, which got five goals from Doug Shanahan, including two in the final five minutes, improved to 6-5, 3-1 America East. The game was a rematch of last year's America East championship game won by the Pride.

Delaware, which will host Hartford next Saturday in its final regular season league game of the season, played its fourth straight one-goal game, including a 7-6 loss to Army March 31 and consecutive league wins of 5-4 over Vermont April 7 and 9-8 in overtime over Drexel on Wednesday.

Delaware sophomore Brad Downer (Annapolis/Annapolis, MD) scored a career-high three goals and dished out an assist and junior Chris Bickley (Abington/Jenkintown, PA) had two goals and two assists for the Blue Hens.

After trailing 8-2 one minute into the second half, Delaware rallied to score seven unanswered goals, three by Downer, to take a 9-8 lead with 10:09 left to play. Senior Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY), who had a goal and two assists and scored a point for the 36th straight game, scored the go-ahead goal for the Hens.

Hofstra ended the run when Shanahan scored his fourth goal of the game just 11 seconds later to knot the score at 9-9. The Hens went up again two minutes later when freshman Ryan Overs (Lynbrook/Lynbrook, NY) scored his first career goal for a 10-9 UD lead.

But Hofstra made one last push to pull out the win. Tom Kessler tied the score at 10-10 just two minutes later with 5:46 left to play and Shanahan followed with the game-winner with 3:55 left to play.
